We are looking for a dynamic lawyer to join Wayfair as our first lawyer in China. This role is international and highly cross-functional, with primary responsibility for all China-related employment matters, in addition to corporate governance and subsidiary management, expansion efforts in Asia, real estate, local incentives work and support for general commercial matters. This lawyer will also have a significant runway to grow in the role and expand their areas of responsibility. A successful candidate will be entrepreneurial, resourceful, comfortable learning new things and highly effective at organization, prioritization and driving impact across the business. This position will be based in our Shanghai office with a hybrid work schedule, 4 days in office and 1 day remote each week. 

What You'll Do 

  • Collaborate with members of the Talent/HR Team with respect to advice and counseling on all China employment-related matters 
  • Drive and scale China expansion and enablement workstreams, including maintaining playbooks for international expansion and standardizing repeatable processes. 
  • Support other local workstreams, including real estate and local incentives work. 
  • Support general commercial matters, including contract drafting and negotiation, legal research and analysis and other internal legal requests. 
  • Partner closely with the business to manage a centralized knowledge base of applicable regulations and compliance requirements for regulated business lines. 
  • Select and manage outside counsel where needed; hold external advisors to a high bar and act as the bridge between outside counsel and our internal teams to drive cost-effective and business-oriented solutions. 
  • Work cross-functionally and hand-in-hand with members of the Talent/HR and Commercial/Operations Teams to develop relationships and gain a keen understanding of what’s happening in the business.
  • Effectively communicate complex legal principles to business stakeholders and partners by crafting succinct and practical advice that helps further the company’s business objectives and mitigate risk. 

What You'll Need 

  • Law degree with top academic credentials and certification to practice law in China. 
  • Excellent analytical, writing and communication skills, with the ability to navigate a large organization and collaborate cross-functionally. 
  • Demonstrated employment law experience and familiarity with Chinese labor laws. 
  • Willingness to master new and unfamiliar areas of practice. Legal knowledge related to any of the following is a plus: e-commerce, commercial contracts, privacy and data protection, real estate and incentives issues. 
  • Project management experience and the ability to prioritize, multi-task, meet deadlines and maintain flexibility in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. 
  • Self-motivation to seek out challenges and tenacity to pursue excellent outcomes; willingness to roll-up sleeves, pitch-in and tackle problems of all shapes and sizes.
