About the Team

Okta’s Business Technology organization powers the internal systems that drive how we operate, scale, and innovate. At the heart of this transformation is the Business Technology Shared Services team — building secure, enterprise-grade capabilities that embed GenAI and automation into the fabric of our business.From virtual agents and document intelligence to smart workflow platforms and AI-enabled service delivery, we’re creating foundational systems that support the next generation of productivity, self-service, and secure operations across Okta.

The Opportunity

As Director of AI & Automation, you will lead a growing engineering team (mix of Full Stack and AI/ML Engineers) focused on building, scaling, and operationalizing AI and automation platforms that serve internal users across Okta. You’ll own delivery of complex cross-functional programs, set long-term technical direction in partnership with engineering and product leadership, and help shape how AI and automation are responsibly adopted across the enterprise.This is a senior leadership role for a proven technical leader who can scale teams, influence strategy, and deliver secure, intelligent platforms with broad business impact.

What You’ll Do

  • Build and lead a high-performing engineering organization — managing multiple teams responsible for delivering AI/automation platforms, services, and internal tools.

  • Set vision and direction in partnership with product, architecture, data science, and security leaders to define scalable, responsible adoption of GenAI technologies.

  • Own end-to-end delivery of cross-functional programs — including intelligent agents, AI-assisted workflows, and self-service automation frameworks.

  • Drive the evolution of Okta’s internal GenAI platform strategy, including governance, experimentation frameworks, architecture patterns, and infrastructure.

  • Establish engineering excellence standards across architecture, code quality, testing, CI/CD, observability, and platform reliability.

  • Partner across Business Technology and enterprise stakeholders (IT, HR, Finance, Customer Support, etc.) to align technology strategy with business outcomes.

  • Coach and grow leaders and ICs — building an inclusive, collaborative, and purpose-driven team culture.

  • Help shape policy and technical standards for responsible AI use, security, and privacy within internal AI systems.

What You’ll Bring

  • 12+ years of software engineering experience with at least 5+ years of engineering leadership (including second-line management or equivalent).

  • Proven success leading high-impact teams and programs involving platform development, distributed systems, and cloud-native services.

  • Experience with AI/ML or GenAI technologies, including integration of LLMs, NLP systems, orchestration frameworks, and vector-based search.

  • Strong foundation in system architecture, secure development practices, and enterprise platform engineering.

  • Ability to influence at the executive level and drive alignment across engineering, product, data, and security organizations.

  • Track record of building and scaling teams, driving cultural excellence, and developing engineering leaders.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with comfort navigating technical and non-technical conversations.

  • A strategic mindset, customer orientation, and a bias for impact and innovation.

Below is the annual base salary range for candidates located in California. Your actual base salary will depend on factors such as your skills, qualifications, experience, and work location. In addition, Okta offers equity (where applicable), bonus, and benefits, including health, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), flexible spending account, and paid leave (including PTO and parental leave) in accordance with our applicable plans and policies. The annual base salary range for this position for candidates located in the San Francisco Bay area is between: $266,000—$398,000 USD
