ESG Investment Writer - Temporary Position

Position Overview:
The StepStone Responsible Investing team is currently seeking an individual who is passionate about ESG and possesses excellent writing skills. This opportunity is for an extended contract position with the opportunity to convert with good work. The position will work closely with the RI team, including the Head of RI, to drive the production of ESG-related materials across StepStone’s platform, with a focus on StepStone’s annual RI report.
Essential job functions:
- Lead the general content creation process for the RI report, from information gathering through to creating content outlines and writing the copy. This will involve working closely with StepStone’s RI team, RI workgroups and deal teams to develop accurate, consistent and compelling content.
- Lead project management of the corporate RI report production; coordinate cross-functionally to ensure internal and external deadlines are met (with oversight from the RI team).
- Create insightful and topical short pieces within the report (e.g., thematic pieces, such as related to climate change or biodiversity or human rights).
- Ensure the report aligns with external standards (including GRI, SASB, TCFD Recommendations, UK Stewardship Code) and develop appendices in the report to illustrate alignment.
- Copyedit and proofread all content within the report and ensure alignment with StepStone’s internal writing guidelines and general market practices.
Alongside the corporate RI report, provide input into RFPs/DDQs/surveys:
- Collaborate with the firm’s RFP team and RI team to review/provide in-depth written answers to questions on a wide variety of ESG topics, ensuring the accuracy and consistency of language.
- Assist in the on-going enhancement and maintenance of the RFP database of responses, keeping updated with RI-related changes within the firm and industry to ensure changes are reflected in RFPs and the RFP database. Ensure information flow through the RFP team.
The successful candidate is expected to have a strong understanding or interest in ESG concepts and issues, excellent project management skills, blended with a solid understanding of the investment management industry. It is preferable that the candidate has prior experience at an investment manager, investment bank, or specialist ESG/Sustainability/Environmental consultancy or agency. While we prefer candidates with a background in ESG, the most important characteristics we’re looking for are meticulousness, strong and clear writing skills in an investment environment, with a proven track record of producing written content for investors and laypeople alike. The candidate is expected to have a demonstrable experience or interest in the private markets (spanning private equity, private debt, real estate, and infrastructure and real assets).
Education and Work Experience Requirements:
- A versatile and accomplished writer with relevant experience; expected to include investment/ESG-related writing within an investment management firm (or investment management clients).
- Experience in ESG/corporate sustainability writing (e.g., annual reports) preferred; experience within private markets preferred.
- Demonstrated track record of academic and professional success, including a BA in a relevant field (with emphasis on written subjects and/or strong academic writing component).
- Exceptional project management skills in a professional setting, with experience owning the end-to-end delivery of strategic projects with multiple stakeholders
- Proven organizational skills and deadline-meeting abilities, including ability to multi-task, manage time across multiple deadlines and adjust project plans as needed.
- Outstanding copyediting and proofreading skills with native-level English proficiency; meticulous attention to detail and an uncompromising focus on quality and accuracy.
- Working knowledge of ESG-related reporting standards, e.g., GRI, SASB, TCFD, UK Stewardship Code.
- The ability to build strong relationships both internally and externally and work across international offices/time zones.
