We are deeply integrated into the payment eco-system. In the UK, we are direct participants of Faster Payments and Bacs. Modulr hold settlement accounts at the Bank of England. Our payment network connectivity includes CHAPS, Open Banking, SEPA, SWIFT and account issuance in 11 currencies. We are principal issuing members of Visa and Mastercard schemes across UK and Europe.
Our regulatory permissions and governance structure are the foundations of our business. We are regulated and supervised as an Authorised Electronic Money Institution (AEMI) in the UK by the Financial Conduct Authority and in the Netherlands by De Nederlandsche Bank.
Our founding team has a wealth of experience in the payments industry and growing successful businesses. Modulr is backed by the venture arms of payments giants PayPal and FIS, as well as growth investors Blenheim Chalcot, General Atlantic, Frog Capital and Europe.
Modulr now has over 400 employees spread globally across offices in London, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, and Mumbai.

The team
This role will sit within the second line risk and compliance function reporting into the Head of Risk & Compliance and be part of a team responsible for ensuring the financial crime frameworks are designed and operating effectively. The wider business teams are based in Edinburgh, London, Amsterdam and Mumbai. Modulr has an office-first policy as face-to-face and ad hoc collaboration will maximise our ability to meet our ambitious growth and profitability goals. In practise we expect our colleagues to be in-office at least 4 days per week.
The role
The scope of the role will be AML, CTF, Fraud and Sanctions and will include advisory, assurance and reporting. The role holder will primarily focus on the UK entity but also work closely with colleagues in the Dutch business where Modulr also holds an EMI licence
Modulr has a strong team with extensive experience in payments, so you will have a chance to learn from some experts with a real passion for developing the business.
Specific duties
- Maintain a strong focus on the external environment to identify best practice and changes in regulatory focus ensure our systems and controls remain proportionate and effective
- Actively engage and participate across the industry to ensure Modulr is a trusted partner with these stakeholders - including regulators and law enforcement.
- Work with colleagues in Operations delivering core Financial Crime services to ensure they are executing to the required standards in terms of quality and outcomes, and provide insight and advice on opportunities to enhance and improve process.
- Provide targeted and general training and awareness to colleagues across the business to ensure a strong culture is in place to tackle financial crime risks.
- Enhance and monitor a suite of KPIs and KRIs to identify areas of strength and areas that require improvement.
- Contribute to key framework items including the annual MLRO report, AML risk assessments and align with colleagues in product to support the relevant product risk assessments.
- Ensure technology and data are at the heart of our compliance agenda, identifying innovative and creative ways to maintain our strong compliance focus whilst optimising service and wider business capability.
- Support annual risk appetite assessment, design key risk indicators, early warning indicators, and risk response strategies.
- Work with Internal Audit to deliver strategies and plans to provide the board with assurance of our status of compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
About you
- You will need to have worked in a similar role within a fast paced FS environment.
- It would be great if you have exposure to Payments and FinTech but not essential.
- Great engagement and influencing skills, recognising the importance of developing strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve results.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to deliver clear and concise messages with actionable insights.
- A strong background in analysing requirements, translating these into specific changes and co-ordinating their implementation across multiple contributors.
