As the Infrastructure Engineer, you will be a crucial member of our IT Infrastructure team, responsible for the seamless operation and evolution of our network and core systems. You will collaborate closely with various IT and business units to plan, implement, and maintain reliable and secure infrastructure that supports Vox Media's continued growth. Ideal candidates will possess a strong passion for both network engineering and systems administration, with a proven track record in project delivery and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

This position reports to the Manager, Infrastructure & InfoSec and is based in New York, NY, with occasional travel to other offices and events as needed.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Network & Systems Infrastructure:

  • Design, implement, and manage both networking and systems infrastructure solutions for Vox Media
  • Troubleshoot network (wired and wireless), server, and application connectivity issues, providing timely and effective support to staff
  • Analyze performance data and statistics for both network and systems, providing recommendations and roadmaps for optimization and growth
  • Manage and maintain critical systems, including servers (physical and virtual), operating systems, and core applications

Systems Administration:

  • Deploy, configure, and maintain Windows Server and Linux server environments
  • Administer virtualization platforms (VMware vSphere, Hyper-V) and manage virtual machine lifecycle
  • Manage Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and other core infrastructure services
  • Implement and manage backup and recovery solutions for systems and configurations
  • Monitor system performance, storage, and ensure high availability of critical services
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, and access controls across multiple platforms

 

Network Management:

  • Configure and maintain Juniper switches, Aruba APs, routing protocols, and fiber connectivity
  • Manage network segmentation, VLANs, and traffic optimization
  • Implement and maintain wireless infrastructure and guest access solutions
  • Monitor network performance and capacity planning

Security & Automation:

  • Define, document, and enforce security and system standards across both network and server environments
  • Implement security policies, patches, and updates for both network devices and server systems
  • Automate routine tasks using scripting languages (Python, PowerShell, Bash) to improve efficiency and reduce errors
  • Conduct regular security assessments and vulnerability management

General Responsibilities:

  • Stay current with industry trends in both networking and systems administration, identifying and proposing new solution options
  • Provide training, mentoring, and tier 3 support for employees on network and systems-related issues
  • Create accurate and comprehensive diagrams and documentation for network topologies, traffic flows, and system configurations
  • Participate in on-call rotation for critical infrastructure support
  • Travel is required up to 10% of the time
WHO YOU ARE

Required Skills:

  • Analytical Skills: Review complex network and system issues to improve operational effectiveness and identify root causes
  • Attention to Detail: Create accurate and comprehensive diagrams and documentation for network topologies, traffic flows, and system configurations, ensuring seamless interoperability
  • Project Management Skills: Demonstrated experience in managing projects from inception to completion, including planning, execution, and maintenance within both network and systems domains
  • Networking Expertise: Strong knowledge of configuring and supporting network devices such as Juniper switches and Aruba APs, routing protocols, and fiber connectivity, with proficiency in Junos OS
  • Systems Administration Expertise: Solid understanding of server operating systems (Windows Server, Linux), virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V), and core system services
  • Automation Skills: Experience with scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, and Bash for automation tasks
  • Security Technologies: Experience with security procedures and policy management in both network (Juniper, Palo Alto, pfSense) and systems environments
  • Problem-Solving: Proactive approach to identifying and resolving infrastructure challenges
Bonus points for:
  • Configuration Management: Familiarity with configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet)
  • Cloud Platforms: Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), hybrid cloud environments, and cloud networking technologies
  • Monitoring & Alerting: Knowledge of monitoring and alerting tools for both network and systems (PRTG, SolarWinds, Nagios, Zabbix)
  • Containerization: Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or other container technologies
  • Database Administration: Basic MySQL, SQL Server, or PostgreSQL administration experience
  • Network Security: Experience with firewalls, VPNs, and network access control systems
  • SD-WAN Solutions: Experience with CATO appliances and SD-WAN technologies

PAY TRANSPARENCY

The salary range listed below represents the minimum and maximum base pay for this position at the time of this posting. Final salary offered to the candidate selected for the position will be based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience.

Pay Range$81,000—$110,000 USD
