Principal Product Manager, Platform (Hybrid)

We are looking for a highly experienced Principal Product Manager to drive the strategy and execution of core platform services at Fastly. This is a critical individual contributor role that requires deep technical understanding of the edge platform market, a strategic mindset, and the ability to influence across engineering, product, and leadership teams. You'll ensure our platform can scale to meet future demands, support new product innovations, and deliver exceptional developer experiences.

What You'll Do:

  • Be a strong advocate for internal and external platform users (developers, product teams, operations), translating their complex needs into clear, actionable platform strategy and requirements.
  • Understand with depth both competitive and business dynamics, and partner with the VP, Platform, to target and drive enhancements to the platform roadmap
  • Own and drive the product vision and roadmap for key platform domains (e.g., support internal teams core infrastructure, compute, data services, developer tools, APIs, observability frameworks) with an eye towards how services  and capabilities would manifest both internally and externally.  Align work with internal teams outside of the Platform org to make this a reality.
  • Synthesize qualitative insights from user research with quantitative analysis of platform telemetry and usage data to uncover opportunities and inform product decisions.
  • Define and manage platform APIs, SDKs, and developer tools, ensuring they are robust, consistent, and provide an excellent developer experience.
  • Drive highly complex, cross-organizational initiatives that span multiple engineering teams and product lines, ensuring platform capabilities are delivered on time and meet architectural standards.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering leadership, architects, and other product managers to define platform architecture principles and ensure long-term scalability and reliability.
  • Effectively communicate platform strategy, roadmap, and capabilities to various stakeholders, including engineering teams, executive leadership, and customer-facing teams.
  • Establish yourself as a technical expert and trusted advisor for platform services, both internally and externally, capable of discussing intricate technical details and strategic implications.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to other Product Managers, helping them understand platform dependencies and best practices for leveraging Fastly's core infrastructure.
  • Define and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for platform health, adoption, and efficiency, continuously optimizing for impact.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field/equivalent experience
  • Extensive, hands-on experience (typically 12+ years) as a Product Manager, specifically focusing on platform, infrastructure, developer tools, or core services in a SaaS, PaaS, or IaaS environment.
  • Deep technical understanding of distributed systems, cloud computing principles, APIs, microservices architectures, and developer ecosystems. Experience with edge computing or CDN technologies is a significant plus.
  • Proven ability to define and drive complex platform roadmaps from ideation through successful rollout, with a strong focus on technical debt management and long-term scalability.
  • Strong analytical skills, capable of leveraging data (telemetry, usage, performance metrics) to make informed product decisions and measure impact.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts and strategic vision to both highly technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A "get stuff done" attitude with a strong sense of accountability and ownership for foundational components.
  • Ability to break down highly ambiguous, large-scale technical challenges into executable product increments.

We’ll be super impressed if you have experience in any of these:

  • Exceptional leadership through influence, with the ability to motivate and drive alignment across diverse, cross-functional engineering and product teams without direct reporting lines.
  • Experience engaging with internal engineering teams as primary "customers" for platform capabilities.
  • A strong user-centric mindset, with experience designing exceptional developer experiences (DX) and robust API interfaces.
