Senior Backend Engineer
The Unified Data Platform team is looking to hire a Senior Backend Engineer. The UDP team is a fairly new one at Movable Ink, having been formed in October 2023. The codebase we are currently working in is a greenfield one, but it fits into an existing ecosystem that has had many years to mature. Your early work will primarily be within our greenfield codebase, but interacting with “established systems” will be a regular concern. UDP is an internal service and your primary customers will be other developers at Movable Ink.
Our development process is very iterative and features daily communication, both asynchronous and synchronously. Our core technologies are F#, GraphQL, Postgres, and property-based testing. As developers we aim to integrate early and often. We are currently using a trunk-based development methodology. Developers regularly check in with each other to consult when making decisions that involve trade-offs. We are still at the stage in greenfield development where most decisions will have long term implications.
We don’t have a checklist of technologies that you need to know in order to get hired. Having experience with the technologies we are using is a nice plus, but not required. We are looking to hire you because you are a good engineer. You’ve learned that almost every solution comes with a set of trade-offs and that the most important part of the job is understanding the context within which we need to weigh those trade-offs.
We are looking for people who start approaching every problem by asking “How will I know it is working?”, “How will I know if I succeeded?” While we work together extensively, it is expected that you will be comfortable with working independently, communicating your ideas to the team. An ability to quickly pick up new tools, languages, workflows, and philosophies will help you succeed on our team.
Responsibilities
- Work with other Engineers to design and implement secure, scalable, highly available services using our core team technologies - F#, postgres, graphql
- Collaborate with product and engineering partners to create reliable solutions
- Participate in our on-call rotation once we go to production in the next couple of months
Requirements
- “How do I know its working” mindset
- Professional software development experience in a team environment
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills, and ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams including product managers, designers, and software engineers
- Experience debugging complex problems. You know how to break down large problems into discrete units that can be set up as hypotheses to test
- Experience going from “I don’t know this poorly documented open-source project” to being able to use, debug, and patch as needed
- Experience working with a version control system such as Git
Nice to have : (these would be things that could become “tiebreakers”, none are requirements)

- HotChocolate GraphQL server experience
- Property based testing
- .Net ecosystem experience

- Experience writing/designing/implementing type systems
- Experience writing database engines
