We are seeking a Senior QA Engineer/SDET to own quality strategy and test automation for distributed, data-intensive systems.

The ideal candidate has strong software-engineering skills and hands-on experience testing event-driven services, streaming pipelines, distributed computation, and stateful applications. This person should be able to identify risks, design comprehensive test strategies, and build reliable automation with minimal oversight.

This is an engineering-focused quality role. It requires building test frameworks, investigating complex system behaviour, and improving quality throughout the development lifecycle—not primarily manual test execution.

Here's a closer look at this key role:

  • Define and own test strategies for distributed services and data-processing systems.
  • Translate technical requirements into detailed test plans and quality criteria.
  • Build and maintain automated testing frameworks, tools, and reusable fixtures.
  • Develop functional, integration, end-to-end, regression, and compatibility tests.
  • Validate data correctness across asynchronous and multi-stage processing workflows.
  • Test stateful behavior, retries, reprocessing, recovery, and idempotency.
  • Verify event ordering, duplicate handling, late-arriving data, and partial failures.
  • Design performance, scalability, endurance, and capacity tests.
  • Conduct fault-injection and resilience testing for service, network, storage, and infrastructure failures.
  • Validate rolling upgrades, backward compatibility, schema evolution, and data migrations.
  • Test concurrency, race conditions, partitioning, and workload-skew scenarios.
  • Create deterministic test datasets and production-representative workloads.
  • Establish quality gates and automated checks within CI/CD pipelines.
  • Improve defect detection through observability, logs, metrics, tracing, and data reconciliation.
  • Investigate production issues and convert them into durable regression tests.
  • Review technical designs for testability, reliability, and operational risk.
  • Partner with developers, data engineers, ML engineers, and infrastructure teams.
  • Mentor engineers and promote shared ownership of quality.
What You'll Need:
  • Strong experience as an SDET, Software Engineer in Test, QA Automation Engineer, or Quality Engineer testing production backend, distributed, cloud, or data-platform systems.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, Java, TypeScript, or another general-purpose programming language, with the ability to build production-quality test infrastructure.
  • Experience designing and building test automation frameworks from the ground up, rather than relying exclusively on record/playback or UI-centric testing tools.
  • Hands-on experience with modern automation frameworks and libraries such as pytest, Playwright, REST Assured, Karate, Pact, Testcontainers, WireMock, k6, Locust, Gatling, or equivalent.
  • Experience testing Kafka or comparable event-streaming/message-broker technologies.
  • Strong experience with API and service-level automation, including REST, WebSocket, gRPC, streaming APIs, and asynchronous APIs where applicable.
  • Experience validating databases, caches, messaging systems, search platforms, and data pipelines rather than validating only API responses.
  • Experience with Testcontainers, Docker Compose, Kubernetes-based test environments, or ephemeral CI environments for realistic integration and end-to-end testing.
  • Hands-on performance and scalability testing experience using tools such as k6, Locust, Gatling, JMeter, or equivalent, including latency, throughput, saturation, and degradation analysis.
  • Experience integrating automated test suites into GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, Argo Workflows, or equivalent CI/CD systems, with automated quality gates and actionable reporting.
  • Ability to diagnose failures across multiple services using logs, metrics, traces, database state, Kafka offsets/events, and application telemetry, rather than treating failed tests as black boxes.
  • Strong understanding of test design, including integration testing, system testing, contract testing, property-based testing, regression testing, performance testing, and failure-path testing.
  • Ability to independently investigate difficult intermittent and nondeterministic failures and distinguish product defects, infrastructure failures, test defects, and environmental issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear defect reports, test strategies, quality assessments, and release-readiness recommendations.
