Every day, many thousands of servers, hosts, and chefs use Toast POS (Point of Sale) to serve millions of guests in their restaurants. To make our restaurants successful, we need to develop products that install painlessly, work together seamlessly, and quickly guide restaurant staff and Toast team members to resolve any problems that occur. 

The Android OS team sits at the intersection of hardware and software and builds a platform that is the foundation for the Toast POS devices enabling creation of features that delight our customers. The Android OS team partners with a broad set of teams including POS R&D, Hardware R&D, Hardware Operations, Configuration Centers and Manufacturing partners. 

We are seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) who is a hands-on technical leader and will pave the path to build Toast’s next generation automated testing framework and associated tests for our Android devices. The strongest candidates would have broad experience with AOSP (Android Open Source Project), would have built automated test frameworks in the past, are collaborative, and can lead technical discussions with various stakeholder teams at Toast.

 

About this roll* (Responsibilities) 
  • Lead the effort to build an automated test framework for AOSP (Android Open Source Project) based devices.
  • Develop automated tests for AOSP based devices.
  • Identify candidate tests for automation from an existing inventory of manual tests and migrate those to automated tests.
  • Analyze device performance and set up processes to identify performance degradation across Android OS firmware versions.
  • Build strong relationships and work closely with Toast ODM partners to efficiently debug and analyze and isolate issues.
  • Evaluate customer reported defects, set priority, and continuously upgrade the automated test inventory with tests to cover new scenarios.
  • Looks beyond the obvious for continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Help set the standard for software quality by adopting modern software test frameworks and practices in day to day development.
Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)
  • 5+ years of automated test development experience, which includes 3 years of experience developing automated tests for Android OS subsystems.
  • A strong understanding of the Android OS architecture.
  • Experience using standard Android platform test frameworks such as Espresso, UI Automator, Tradefed or similar. 
  • Experience debugging issues within Android OS locally and remotely especially for issues that are not inhouse reproducible.
  • Proficient in scripting languages for test framework development such as Python, Bash.
  • Proficient in C/C++, Java or other object oriented programming languages.
  • Experience working with source control tools such as Git, Gerrit, GitHub, and with Android command line tools such as adb and fastboot.
  • Passionate about solving large scale problems and building great software for customers.
Bonus ingredients* (preferred skills)
  • Experience developing applications or services on the Android platform in C++, Java or Kotlin.
  • Experience using device observability tools such as splunk or similar.
  • Experience with the payment industry and card reader debugging.
  • Experience with hardware bring-up and Linux Kernel driver debugging.
