Staff Software Engineer, Edge Linux

Join Fastly's Kernel Engineering team and be a key player in advancing our development processes. In this role, you will develop and maintain the critical tooling that optimizes the software development life cycle for our team of kernel engineers. Your work will directly support the performance and stability of Fastly's low-latency data path, essential to all customer traffic flowing through the Linux kernel and XDP. As part of the Kernel team, you will help drive the adoption of the latest Linux technologies, while providing essential support for our hardware platform, OCI containers, and Linux OS distributions. Your contributions will be vital in ensuring our systems remain at the forefront of performance and reliability, with a broad impact across the company.

What You'll Do:
  • Contribute to technical direction and architectural decisions for kernel development, aligning with Fastly's strategic goals
  • Develop innovative solutions in kernel, XDP, system architecture, and distro tooling, supporting the evolution of Fastly’s Linux Operating System
  • Provide expert technical insights and support on key projects involving kernel development, architecture, networking, and reliability engineering
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering and Operations teams to enhance performance, automation, and efficiency across the organization
  • Support planning and execution to ensure projects are well-structured and align with organizational objectives
What We're Looking For: 
  • 7+ years of experience in software development using one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, Go, Rust), with 3 of those years leading projects
  • Expertise in advanced deployment and testing methodologies
  • Proficiency in upstream patchset management for large open source projects, including rebasing, troubleshooting, and community participation
  • Strong ability to diagnose, design, and develop high-performance networking applications.
  • Experience maintaining Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Debian, etc) with a strong focus on enabling and empowering other teams through optimized systems and support.
  • Experience with OCI containers (e.g., Docker) particularly in overcoming challenges related to container registry management and creating scalable frameworks to support development teams.
  • Proven ability to design and implement broadly scoped work such as for a major refactor, new service, feature used by key accounts or other impactful changes
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
We’ll be super impressed if you have experience in any of these: 
  • Experience in Linux kernel development, including maintenance of Linux kernel subsystems.
  • Large scale fleet management and release techniques.
  • Experience with acute incident response including addressing security vulnerabilities.
  • Implementing IETF RFC specifications particularly transport protocols.
  • Experience in distributed systems and highly available environments.
Work Hours:

This position will require you to be available during core business hours.

Salary:

The estimated salary range for this position is $176,140 to $244,640.

Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location.

This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly’s equity and discretionary bonus programs.
