The role

As the Associate Director Sustainability you will lead our HelloFresh International Sustainability Department, driving targets, defining new scopes, initiating new projects and evolving the needed team structure. Our goal is to further our position as a recognised leader in the areas of climate change mitigation, food waste reduction, sustainable sourcing and the sustainability empowerment of our consumers, achieved through innovations that are commercially viable & globally scalable.  You will be part of the Upstream organization and be responsible for direct management of  our sustainability team based at our Berlin HQ, as well as providing steering guidance to our International Sustainability staff spread throughout our local markets. You will work with local markets and cross-departmental teams on new group targets, defining local and global OKRs and strengthening our sustainability community internally and externally. In addition, you will oversee the Global ESG reporting team, specifically focused on delivering CSRD-compliant non-financial reporting.

What you’ll do
  • Collaborate - As a point of contact for all international markets, and working across different departments and stakeholders, you will play a pivotal role in the topics of knowledge sharing and communication with the sustainability community.
  • Build - Support and drive smart solutions that will make HelloFresh the most sustainable company in its field such as running new research studies (e.g. LCAs), improving our data landscape, improving on existing materials with new solutions, photovoltaic systems, E-fleets, Green Energy, etc.
  • Facilitate - Share best practices across markets and promote sustainable change among HelloFresh employees and customers.
  • Educate - Share your deep knowledge of sustainability-related topics with the organization, elevating our common knowledge and support more junior team members to accelerate their learning curves and impact.
  • Develop - a team culture and create structure via a strategically defined OKR framework.
  • Manage - a team with complex projects involving other departments and position yourself as the overall sustainability expert interface for other teams. 
  • Mentor - colleagues from Supply, Product & FSQA departments on sustainability topics.

As part of our International Operations team, you will be in charge of:

  • Leading the HelloFresh International Sustainability Organization 
  • Managing and driving our existing OKRs and make sure we deliver on them 
  • Our international sustainability program to improve our energy efficiency, waste reduction, and carbon footprint improvements across our international operations in countries across Europe and Australia/New Zealand
  • The HelloFresh Group Non-Financial Reporting, ensuring our reporting meets and exceeds regulatory requirements like CSRD
  • Aligning on sustainability initiatives with other internal stakeholders like Brand, Communications, Investors Relations, HR, and Legal
  • Definition, standardization and roll-out of energy efficiency, waste reduction and carbon footprint reduction programs
  • Providing technical sustainability guidance and recommendations directly to C Level and Supervisory Board Leadership
  • Monitoring of target setting and achievement
  • Development of energy consumption forecasts and carbon trajectories
  • Providing expert knowledge and best practice methods in regards to sustainability to our local subsidiaries
What you’ll bring

Required:

  • Minimum 5 years of demonstrated experience working in the Sustainability Industry. 
  • Minimum 3 years direct report management experience with a varied portfolio.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Sustainable Production, Environmental Economics, Environmental Management, Renewable Energy or equivalent sustainability field.
  • Familiarity with current developments in the Sustainability world on both the  innovation & regulatory compliance sides. 
  • Expert level understanding of GHG Protocol, Life Cycle Assessment, Triple Horizon Planning, Regenerative Agriculture & other critical sustainability concepts.
  • Understanding of CSRD, NFRD, CDP, GRI & other ESG reporting frameworks and demonstrated experience working with third party auditors.
  • Minimum 3 years strategic partnership management experience, working with Consultancy Partners, NGO’s, Industry Bodies and Regulators.
  • A passion to drive and build sustainable solutions that are grounded in environmental economic thinking, ensuring commercial viability.
  • You are a data-driven person who makes decisions based on rational reasoning
  • You have an entrepreneurial mindset combined with the ability to take the initiative, work independently and drive implementation
  • You are willing to travel regionally up to 20% of the time and internationally when required
  • You are able to write technical requirements, develop business models, and define support requirements and processes
  • You have excellent command of the English language. Further languages are nice to have

Nice-to-have:

  • Degree educated in a related field. 
  • 5-7 years work experience in the sustainability fields in food, FMCG, industrial or logistics operations
  • Knowledge of managing an organization through OKR frameworks 
  • Knowledge of sustainable construction and experience in sustainability assessment methodologies
  • SQL experience
  • Membership of a professional body (environment, energy or sustainability)
