The role in a nutshell

We are looking for a dedicated and forward-thinking Global Head of Risk to join our team and lead our risk management efforts on a global scale.  The role will be based in South Africaand will join our Global Heads of Legal, Compliance and Public Policy to complete a strong functional leadership team.

You will be responsible for the oversight of risk management across the Luno group of companies, ensuring we maintain a robust risk and control environment. You will be comfortable operating in a fast-moving, complex environment and while you will be willing and able to take a “hands-on” approach, you will also provide strong strategic thinking and decision-making.

• Supporting the Board and Executive Committee in developing and maintaining an appropriate risk governance framework for a regulated institution;
• Owning and enhancing Luno’s risk management framework and processes, ensuring they are embedded across the group;
• Ensuring Luno’s risk policy universe is effectively defined and maintained;
• Maintaining and developing the group risk appetite framework and working with relevant functions to establish and maintain associated metrics and limits;
• Owning the risk and control assessment process and supporting the business in implementing identified control improvements; 
• Providing support to and oversight of major control initiatives and in embedding risk management into major change programmes;
• Working with all relevant control and support functions to develop specialist risk management and control methodologies and processes;
• Working with Treasury to develop risk methods for managing financial risks including credit, market, liquidity and capital adequacy risks;
• Managing and refining Luno’s risk reporting to ensure that senior management and the board have a clear understanding of the Luno risk profile and to support effective decision-making with respect to risk management and the control environment;
• Playing a key role in Luno’s group Risk Committee.

• Obtain an in-depth understanding of Luno and the environment in which it operates;
• Build and develop meaningful relationships with internal stakeholders;
• Conduct a full review of the existing risk management framework and develop a roadmap for the next stage of development.

• At least 10 years’ experience in risk management, preferably within a regulated financial services firm, preferably within capital markets;
• A broad understanding of different risk disciplines spanning operational/enterprise risk and financial risk disciplines;
• A good understanding of both prudential and conduct regulation applied in financial services industry;
• Experience of leading major change initiatives relating to risk management and control;
• Experience of working with risk management systems and tools;
• An understanding of risk measurement methodologies including stress testing and scenario analysis;
• Understanding and experience of risk management within the crypto industry and/or in an exchange environment is preferable;
• Proven ability to build and manage a team;
• Excellent judgment and decision-making skills;
• The ability to think from first principles and adapt to the unique needs of our business;
• Effective communication skills;
• A willingness to build and develop strong relationships across all levels of a business.
