Position Overview:

StepStone Group LP (StepStone) seeks a Portfolio Management Associate for its La Jolla, CA location.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Contribute to revenue generation for StepStone through the development of bespoke analyses and the application/expansion of in-house quantitative tools and models across Private Equity, Private Debt, Real Estate and Real Assets
  • Lead projects that require the Python and R languages to create models and analyses that offer insights to our clients
  • Leverage expertise in data sources within private markets to develop slides and analyses that get repeated use throughout the firm for business development and addressing client questions.
  • Deploy new technologies, such as Power BI dashboards, VBA coding in Excel, and integrating Github Copilot.
  • Utilize knowledge of data scraping techniques to extract and gather data from diverse platforms and implement rigorous validation processes to ensure the quality of collected data.
  • Employ proficiency in PowerPoint and Excel (including formatting, plotting, and data/model validation checks) to deliver outputs that are client-ready.
  • Lead technical Q&A sessions during calls and meetings with clients and prospects, effectively translating complex concepts into accessible and understandable language.
  • Design and create PowerPoint decks that highlight portfolio construction and management solutions for clients and prospects.
  • Work with other departments to achieve StepStone’s business objectives and jointly troubleshoot any issues that arise.
  • Mentor interns and analysts, having a material impact on their knowledge of coding and private markets.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • Must have a Master’s degree in Quantitative Finance, Mathematics in Finance or a related field and 2 years of experience as a Quantitative Analyst or related role in the private markets sector.
  • Full term of required experience must include:
    • Experience utilizing knowledge of public financial products and data sources for stocks, bonds, macroeconomic factors and interest rate and currency derivatives to drive assumptions in financial models
    • Leveraging expertise in private markets concepts (including performance and risk metrics and fee, liquidity and pacing models) to help develop and implement quantitative models (for liquidity, fees and valuation)
    • Utilizing knowledge of the structure of private markets investments across primaries, secondaries and co-investments to assist the underwriting business
    • Supporting portfolio construction by catering to the unique characteristics of Private Equity, Private Debt, Real Assets and Real Estate
    • Applying statistical techniques to bring research projects from an idea to a final business product for firm-wide use
    • Delivering solutions that address client questions, tailored to their use case
    • Building and modifying financial models in Excel, including various equity and debt structures and modeling financial return
    • Using private markets datasets for all asset classes from providers including Preqin and Pitchbook, as well as cleaning and transforming unstructured data into database-ready formats
    • Coding quantitative models across asset classes in Python and R
    • Driving the model development cycle, including code efficiency, troubleshooting, integration with existing systems, documentation, quality assurance and iterative improvement
    • Converting research outputs into client-ready PowerPoint slides
    • Collaborating with interns and analysts to deliver analyses and build junior knowledge base
    • Delivering segments of external client calls and meetings to communicate findings and establish trusted relationships with clients and prospects
    • Adding a technical perspective to client discussions
    • Optimizing based on client-specific goals and risk tolerance
    • Assessing the potential impact of various market conditions on the investment portfolios.
