The Hardware Supply Chain Operations Quality team is seeking an Associate Hardware Quality Engineer to join our team. As an Associate Hardware Quality Engineer, you will be responsible for analyzing customer returns and field failures to determine the root cause and work with the relevant parties on corrective and preventative actions including design changes and process improvements. You may also be responsible for leading the containment and resolution of field quality events from time to time.

The successful candidate must be hands-on, have the ability to meet tight deadlines, have strong interpersonal and communication skills, be detail-oriented, and have the ability to work independently in situations with limited information. This person must establish and maintain a professional working relationship not only with other team members but also other teams within Toast. 

A day in the life (Responsibilities) 

  • Perform and lead  triage and failure analysis of customer returned hardware devices.
  • Manage root cause analysis activities of internal and external teams 
  • Utilize knowledge of electronics and PCBA to identify risks and failures in design and manufacturing of Toast products.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, both internal and external, to understand hardware requirements, review design, and validate changes.
  • Interface with Logistics, Supplier Quality teams and suppliers to identify, contain, correct non-conforming materials and processes
  • Participate in the execution and maintenance of regulatory processes at Toast
  • Work closely with stakeholders to present business cases that drive decision-making and support the implementation of design and process improvements.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to enhance quality processes and reduce defects.
  • Implement best practices in quality management and drive a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Up to 5% travel, both domestic and international, may be required
  • Up to 3 days per week in-office as needed based on work demands with a minimum of 2 day per week in-office.

What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field. (Master's degree preferred.) 
  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience.
  • Experience as a Quality Engineer with a focus on hardware root cause analysis and design improvements.
  • Previous experience in printed circuit board assembly, high volume manufacturing industry, quality management system.
  • Experience using basic hand tools and digital multi-meter
  • Ability to work independently and with limited data will be critical to success in this role
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

What will help you stand out (Nonessential Skills/Nice to Haves)

  • Proficiency with advanced electrical diagnostics tools such as oscilloscopes
  • Familiarity with structured problem solving process such as 8D and fish-bone diagrams preferred
  • Familiarity with common industry standards such as IEC61000-4 is a plus

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills and experience. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions, if eligible), benefits, and equity (if eligible).

Pay Range$72,000—$115,000 USD
