vor 8 Monate

We're seeking a new member for our collegial and nimble team of fact-checkers to help in the production of our biweekly, award-winning magazine. Fact-checkers at New York Magazine play an integral role in the creation and vetting of the magazine by working closely with editors and reporters to ensure the quality, accuracy, and fairness of stories in the magazine; they also work on digital enterprise features and reporting for New York Media's suite of sites. Although this is not a writing position, staff fact-checkers have ample opportunity to contribute writing and reporting to the magazine and online.

WHO WE ARE

New York Magazine obsessively chronicles the ideas, people, and cultural events that are forever reshaping our world. The New York brand includes the groundbreaking magazine New York, which is published biweekly in print, and six thriving verticals: Intelligencer, delivering national news and sharp commentary on politics, business, technology, and media; the Cut, covering the conversations that matter most to women today; Vulture, the premier destination for culture news, criticism, and service; the Strategist, dedicated to shopping the internet smartly; Curbed, covering cities and city life; and Grub Street, home to food news and authoritative restaurant criticism.

New York Magazine is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what’s now, what’s next, and what’s possible.

As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
  • Ensure the quality of the print magazine and New York Media's suite of websites through rigorous fact-checking, including, but not limited to, interviewing all principal sources, contacting experts to corroborate information and to evaluate the framing of material, and independently researching and verifying all factual claims in assigned stories.

  • Communicate changes clearly and collaboratively to editors, writers, and copy-editors through all stages of production.

  • Assist in reporting and research for the print magazine in conjunction with the writers and editors.

  • Work closely with the magazine’s attorneys, in conjunction with the research director and editors, to identify and mitigate potential legal claims.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned by manager or supervisor.

WHO YOU ARE
  • 1-2 years of professional reporting or fact-checking experience required

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team

  • Ability to work collaboratively with editors and to communicate changes clearly and effectively, but with grace and humility

  • Ability to effectively juggle multiple deadlines

  • Detail-driven with a sharp eye for mistakes

  • Strong understanding and affinity for the editorial sensibility of New York

  • Previous experience fact-checking stories of feature length is strongly desired, but not essential for candidates who have a commensurate amount of reporting experience

  • Fluency in a second language is preferred, but not essential

If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We’ve hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.
