Snapshot

We need a forward-thinking leader to drive our frontier policy efforts in the United States. Reporting to the Director Frontier Policy and Partnerships, you will lead our federal and state strategy, mobilizing Google DeepMind’s world-leading resources to shape the debate on frontier AI policy across the country, building the coalitions necessary to foster innovation and safety. 

You will drive strategically important policy work on safety and resilience, national security, science and industrial policy. This is a high-intensity role for someone who can be both strategic and move at pace to drive impact. 

You will be responsible for crafting and executing a sophisticated public affairs strategy, shaping policy debates and regulatory frameworks through high-impact, substantive engagement. This role requires a leader who can operate at the intersection of policy, technology, and commercial strategy, working closely with senior leaders across Google DeepMind and the broader Google ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategy: Lead the design and execution of our US frontier AI policy strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities. 
  • Advocacy: Navigate and shape discussions across the complex DC and State landscape on how AI is governed and policies for supporting adoption of frontier AI, ensuring its benefits are realized safely and responsibly.
  • Engagement: Build and maintain high-trust relationships with key government stakeholders, as well as the technical policy community. This includes key figures in AI safety labs, academic centers, and specialized think tanks.
  • Government Partnerships: Bring GDM resources and partner with government to ensure frontier AI delivers across strategically significant national challenges across science, education and national security.
  • Campaign Design & Execution: Deliver multi-channel policy campaigns and build coalitions on important issues such as AI for Science.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as the key interlocutor between government needs and our internal teams. You will partner with our technical, research, and business development units to translate government requirements into actionable projects and potential commercial opportunities in partnership with Google teams.

About You

To be successful as the US Public Policy lead at Google DeepMind, you will need to be mission-oriented with a bias for action, capable of translating high-level strategy into impact, and have the following skills and experience:

  • Government Experience: Experience working within or closely with US government, preferably in technology policy, national security, science or related roles. You understand the machinery of government and how to navigate complex political landscapes.
  • Substantive Frontier AI Fluency: You have a deep understanding of the frontier AI landscape, including the technical nuances of, and current debates around, language models, agents, and the socio-technical challenges of frontier AI. 
  • Proven Policy Leadership: A track record of leading high-impact policy design and advocacy, ideally within the technology sector. You have experience designing and executing successful strategies to shape policy and build relationships with senior government officials.
  • Deep Policy Expertise with an Understanding of the Frontier AI Space: Strong grasp of technology policy, ideally with a good understanding of frontier AI, with a demonstrable ability to quickly master complex technical and governance issues related to AI. 
  • Leadership, Influence and Communication skills: Proven ability to influence a variety of internal and external audiences, communicate clearly and effectively and build strong, trust-based relationships with senior stakeholders.
  • Mission-Oriented: A genuine passion for the potential of advanced AI and a commitment to contributing to Google DeepMind’s mission of ensuring AI is developed for the benefit of humanity.
  • AI Fluency: Ability to leverage AI in own work and promote across the wider organisation.

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

  • Experience working on AI policy issues.
  • Established networks within key government and policy circles in the US
  • Experience in a fast-paced, matrixed organization, working across multiple teams and functions.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $221,000 - $311,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
