The roleThis Lead (Technical) Program Manager role will drive critical initiatives and direction for the Science & Strategic Initiatives team at Google DeepMind.
The Science & Strategic Initiatives team is working on scientific breakthroughs that help scientists tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
The team’s portfolio includes projects across the sciences, including biology, chemistry, maths and computer science. It also includes strategic initiatives in areas such as AI transparency. See deepmind.google/science/ for more details.
The role of Program Managers at Google DeepMind is to organise and enable our teams to be the best at what they do and to make fast-paced progress towards our goal.
Key responsibilities- Lead the successful delivery of a program of research projects:
- Ensuring rapid and seamless execution in a complex and changing environment.
- Drive critical initiatives across the team: Propose, develop and drive strategic projects.
- Lead on change management in a highly dynamic environment. Champion transformation and simplification. Streamline processes, simplify and automate operations for optimal efficiency
- Oversee the portfolio and delivery of key operational processes: Drive for excellence in activities ranging from goal setting to headcount planning and budgeting.
- Lead the Program Management team: Manage and develop a team of Program Managers, providing leadership, advice and mentorship on their development. Role model Google DeepMind’s values, fostering an inclusive team culture.
- Build strong relationships: Engage with key stakeholders and influence action and outcomes without direct authority, ensuring alignment stakeholders.
- Facilitate communication and collaboration: Build bridges between research teams and with wider Google stakeholders, ensuring alignment with business objectives and responsible development practices
- Partner with team leads: Co-develop program strategies, goals, priorities, and success metrics for the program.
- Apply deep technical understanding and program management expertise: Guide research programs, influence technical decision making, and accelerate the delivery of research breakthroughs
In order to set you up for success as a Lead (Technical) Program Manager at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:
- Expertise in program leadership: You have experience driving complex research and development programs with ownership, consistently delivering exceptional results while successfully navigating ambiguity.
- Proven strategic partnership: You have a consistent track record of successfully collaborating with leaders to drive the execution of ambitious, high-impact programs
- Leadership for growth: An experienced manager, you excel in coaching techniques, empowering individuals and diverse teams to thrive in a fast-faced, high-performance environment.
- Influential communicator: You build impactful relationships with senior stakeholders and research leads across the organisation, using your outstanding communication skills to drive alignment, action, and outcomes.
- Deep technical expertise: Technical degree or advanced working knowledge. Industry experience should include developing technical strategy and experience launching complex products.
- Quick learner: Ability to quickly learn about new technical domains, gaining sufficient working knowledge to understand the challenges and risk while balancing perspective and holding a broader view of trade offs and opportunities.
- Passionate about AI for Science: You are passionate about using AI to have a transformative impact in the sciences.
In addition, the following would be an advantage:
- Educational background in the natural sciences, computer science, or a related field.
- Experience working in a research environment.
- Experience with the commercialization of research breakthroughs.
