Snapshot

Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.

About Us

We are looking for a research scientist or research engineer to join our team, uniquely positioned to conduct foundational research and maximize its impact in the real world through Google products and Gemini.

By combining LLM foundation models with classic optimization approaches, we push the boundary on automated agentic optimization, and automated optimization of systems used by hundreds of teams in Alphabet.  If you are passionate about cross-team collaboration with other research and product teams, we encourage you to apply.

The Role

As a research scientist/engineer, you will work closely with the rest of the team on cutting-edge applied research. You will help develop core team infrastructure and conduct research on automated prompt optimization, agentic optimization and next-gen Auto-AI.

Key responsibilities:
  • Research and develop novel algorithms for automated prompt optimization and agentic optimization
  • Develop end-to-end automated optimization solutions that work in the real world
  • Work closely with other research scientists & engineers across Google Deepmind, and product teams across Google in a collaborative environment
  • See your work impact in Gemini, and Google products/services across many domains
About You

In order to set you up for success as a Research Engineer at Google DeepMind,  we look for the following skills and experience:

  • PhD in machine learning, computer science, statistics or a closely related field
  • Interest in automated optimization (algorithms that evolve solutions automatically)
  • Proven ability to design and execute independent research projects
  • Strong software engineering skills in Python
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas effectively, e.g. through discussions, whiteboard sessions, written documentation

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

  • Experience prototyping with LLMs with modern prompting strategies (e.g., thinking / reasoning)
  • Experience with developing agentic AI solutions to complex problems
  • Experience with LLM post-training

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $197,000 - $291,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
