The Edge Protocols Team develops software that interacts with both sides of Fastly front and back - handling every incoming client request to Fastly, and talking to customers’ websites. Projects range from implementing new protocols, efficient load balancing, routing among the edge nodes, defending customers from attacks, security enhancements, and more. Initially, we expect this position to focus on enhancing our DDoS detection and prevention mechanisms, with a focus on automation. We are looking for a Senior Engineer passionate about applying their talents to make the Internet fast and reliable.

What You'll Do

  • Design and build critical components of Fastly’s CDN networking stack
  • Optimize computation and network performance by observing real-world traffic
  • Enhance Fastly’s DDoS protection mechanisms
  • Lead projects from design to deployment, working with other teams to deploy, support, troubleshoot, and deliver features to customers
  • Contribute to open source projects which we rely upon, such as the H2O project

What We're Looking For

  • You have at least 2 years of production experience with coding in Rust or C , and proficiency in the other language, to implement scalable, low latency systems
  • Additionally, you have 2 years of experience with Linux systems and network programming
  • Desire and capability to learn and apply additional programming languages
  • Experience developing tests and test automation
  • Experience using and improving modern software development infrastructure (development environments, CI, testing, deployment)
  • Good understanding of service-oriented architectures, microservices, and design patterns
  • You have a strong background with Web/Internet protocols such as HTTP, TLS, DNS, TCP/IP, UDP, QUIC
  • Solid knowledge of Linux as a development environment: git, compilers

We'll be super impressed if you have experience in ANY of these:

  • Experience analyzing DDoS attacks, and with common techniques employed to mitigate them
  • Comfortable working in a geographically distributed team and highly available environments
  • Proficient in Perl, Go, or similar high level languages

Work Hours: This position will require you to be available during core business hours

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing bot management or data collection technology, such as web client analytics
  • Experience with developing or using anti-reverse-engineering technology
  • Data privacy or information security expertise
  • Experience with Android or iOS mobile application development
  • Expertise in analysis and problem solving on large-scale distributed systems
  • Experience with CDNs, proxies, or edge computing technology

Fastly currently embraces a largely hybrid model for most roles which allows employees flexibility to split their time between the office and home.  

This position may require travel as required by your role or requested by your manager.

Salary

The estimated salary range for this position is $155,370 to $194,210.

Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location.

This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly’s equity and discretionary bonus programs.
