We are looking to hire high-energy, value-adding talent to join Modulr, the fastest growing payments business in the UK and Europe, to drive the evolution of our backend systems, ensuring they meet the highest standards of scalability, reliability and performance. This role will be pivotal in crafting innovative solutions that will impact millions of transactions daily. We are looking for a London-based candidate to leverage our office-first strategy.

The Role

The Senior Software Engineer is a vital role within Modulr and this role will support the continuous improvement and innovation of our backend systems, ensuring they are robust, efficient and scalable.  Key Responsibilities 

  • Architect, develop and analyse scalable backend services, APIs, and subsystems, ensuring comprehensive documentation and testing procedures are supported. 
  • Collaborate with other squads, teams and stakeholders to identify and implement effective software solutions.
  • Take a lead in design and code reviews, ensuring high-quality standards and best practices. 
  • Continuously improve engineering standards, tooling and processes. 
  • Proactively identify and address issues, bottlenecks or areas for improvement. 
  • Work in an agile environment, using Scrum or Kanban methodologies. 
  • Coordinate with QA teams to ensure thorough testing and quality assurance. 
  • Document best practices and system designs to facilitate knowledge sharing. 
  • Analyse and troubleshoot existing systems to optimize performance. 
  • Participate in on-call rotations to address urgent platform issues.

The Team 

The Backend Engineering team at Modulr is a dynamic and innovative group that is at the core of our technology stack. This role will report to the Engineering Manager and will work closely with Product Managers, QA Engineers and other cross-functional teams. You will have the opportunity to mentor junior developers and contribute to the growth and development of the team. The Backend team collaborates regularly with the Frontend, DevOps and Data teams to deliver cohesive and cutting-edge payment solutions

About You 

A successful Software Engineer will have a track-record in delivering results in a fast-moving business and hence be comfortable with change and uncertainty. Excellent stakeholder management experience is essential to being successful in this role.

The Ideal Candidate 

  • Expert in Java (or similar object-orientated languages with a willingness to learn Java) and experience with open-source technologies, including Spring and Hibernate. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Microservices architecture. 
  • Experience in designing, building and maintaining RESTful APIs. 
  • Previous experience working with AWS systems and frameworks is a bonus, but not essential.
  • You are a self-starter and collaborative team player who thrives in a fast-paced environment.
  • As a strong problem-solver, you have the ability to apply analytical, critical thinking to identify key solutions. 
  • Strong understanding of quality concepts and practices, ensuring high standards in all deliverables. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in managing code reviews and providing feedback.
