The Difference You Will Make:

We're Looking For a Senior Backend Engineer to take the lead in evolving our Messaging Platform. This role is pivotal in building and innovating the backbone that supports all Airbnb messaging, ensuring scalability, performance, and cutting-edge functionality.

A Typical Day: 

• Build and Innovate: Develop and own significant engineering projects to enhance the Messaging Platform's scalability and performance.
• Collaborate: Work closely with cross-functional engineering teams to support their messaging requirements and with frontend counterparts to design impactful features.
• Lead Technological Advancement: Drive the evolution of Airbnb's messaging architecture towards modern technologies.

Your Expertise:

• 5+ years of industry engineering experience
• BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent work experience
• Proven background in developing and maintaining large-scale backend distributed systems using Java or Kotlin. Experience with high-traffic platform backend services is a significant plus.
• Strong architectural knowledge, comfort working across multiple repositories, services, and environments.
• A pragmatic, data-driven problem solver with a passion for continuous learning and collaboration. Ability to foster an inclusive team environment and work effectively in a remote setting.

Your Location:

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager.
