The Role

As a Software Engineer on the Personal Intelligence team, you will be at the heart of shaping how millions of users experience Google’s most advanced AI. You will drive the strategy and development of personalization capabilities that make Gemini more helpful and engaging. This role focuses on enhancing Gemini’s ability to deliver highly relevant, useful responses and interaction by deeply understanding user context, preferences, and intent. 

You will work with teams across GDM and products to drive the technical agenda for personalization in Gemini models. You will drive the technical agenda for personal intelligence evals, post-training, data retrieval, summarization, and data collection. The impact of your work will be directly apparent in Google’s products.

Key responsibilities:

  • Drive the technical vision, strategy, and roadmap for Gemini’s personalization capabilities, focusing on how the model elicits and applies user context to help users achieve their goals
  • Develop and maintain the "Model Spec" for Gemini's behavior and personalization, defining key attributes—such as persona, tone, and helpfulness—and the north star metrics and evaluations to guide model development.
  • Develop robust, strong evals for personalization model capabilities to hill climb on quality
  • Create innovative training recipes to enhance Gemini’s model capabilities on personalization needs
  • Partner closely with research scientists, engineers and cross-functional partners (product and program managers) to advance the state of the art in personal intelligence

 

About You

In order to set you up for success as a GDM Software Engineer, Gemini Personal Intelligence at Google DeepMind,  we look for the following skills and experience:

Requirements: 

  • BSc, MSc or PhD/DPhil degree in computer science or other quantitative scientific field, or similar experience working in industry,
  • 5 years of experience with machine learning algorithms and tools, artificial intelligence, deep learning and/or natural language processing.
  • 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages, and with data structures/algorithms.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional, and/or cross-business projects.
  • Experience working with LLM or ML evaluations systems
  • Experience training models with various techniques including SFT and RL
  • Solid proficiency in Python or C++,
  • Experience with data pipelines and techniques for processing large-scale user data,
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills.

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

  • Ability to operate in ambiguity and to move with urgency
  • Experience working on personalization for machine-learning models
  • Facilitate alignment and clarity across teams on goals, outcomes, and timelines.

 

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $248,000 - $349,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
