Who we are & why we’re hiring

Twilio powers real-time business communications and data solutions that help companies and developers worldwide build better applications and customer experiences.

Although we're headquartered in San Francisco, we have presence throughout South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. We're on a journey to becoming a global company that actively opposes racism and all forms of oppression and bias. At Twilio, we support diversity, equity & inclusion wherever we do business.

About the job

As an engineering manager on the Twilio Segment Compute team, you’ll build and scale systems that process hundreds of thousands of data points per second and query petabytes of data to unlock rich capabilities for our customer data platform (CDP). The team you oversee will have a deep understanding of large distributed systems and data processing at scale. You’ll be responsible for managing engineers, leading execution, and guiding the technical decisions of the team to deliver high business impact. You’ll also need to be able to articulate the trade-offs between cost and performance and design solutions that balance reliability, performance, and product velocity.

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll:

  • Lead a team of backend engineers to scale and operate foundational compute systems.
  • Set the technical vision for your team and be accountable for team plans and deliverables.
  • Grow and develop a high-performing team of hardworking and motivated engineers.
  • Ensure your team delivers high output with strong ownership and impact.

Qualifications

Not all applicants will have skills that match a job description exactly. Twilio values diverse experiences in other industries, and we encourage everyone who meets the required qualifications to apply. While having “desired” qualifications make for a strong candidate, we encourage applicants with alternative experiences to also apply. If your career is just starting or hasn't followed a traditional path, don't let that stop you from considering Twilio. We are always looking for people who will bring something new to the table!

Required:

  • BS in a relevant field or related work experience.
  • 8+ years of hands-on experience building production grade systems and working with data at scale.
  • 2+ years of engineering management experience.
  • The ability to communicate well. You can explain technical concepts to cross-functional stakeholders, other engineers, and support teams.
  • Have strong familiarity with agile processes, engineering best practices, and believe in automation over toil.

Desired:

  • Experience with Apache Flink, Trino, Spark, or other distributed compute frameworks
  • Experience managing and operating AWS infrastructure
  • Experience working in a geographically distributed team.
