The Community You Will Join:

We are seeking a Staff Data Engineer to join the Data Stewardship team. As a Staff Data Engineer, you will work closely with our engineering, privacy, and information security partners to build strategies, programs, and tools to improve the quality, efficiency, and safety of Airbnb’s data. The Data Stewardship team is the ultimate host to Airbnb’s data: We drive responsible, yet powerful and efficient data use, we ensure data is trustworthy and easy to use, and we nurture a data-inspired culture.

As a Data Steward, you are passionate about efficient data management, privacy techniques, understanding the regulatory landscape, and helping teams create high quality data. 

The Difference You Will Make:

As a Staff Data Engineer in the Data Stewardship team you will play a pivotal role in defining the vision, technical design, and implementation of systems that ensure the integrity, efficiency, and compliance of our organization's data across all business areas. 

Your expertise in designing and implementing scalable systems will be essential in building a robust data infrastructure that safeguards user data and empowers decision-makers with valuable insights. As we navigate a continuously evolving regulatory landscape, your contribution will be vital in developing cutting-edge tools to maintain data integrity while unlocking the full potential of our data resources.

A Typical Day:

  • Develop high quality data assets for product and AI/ML use-cases
  • Develop frameworks and tools to scale insight generation to meet critical business and product requirements
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, assess data needs, and design efficient solutions that align with business objectives.
  • Contribute to the development of long-term data strategies and roadmaps, and influence the technical direction of analytics engineering practices within the organization.
  • Influence the trajectory of data in decision making
  • Improve trust in our data by championing for data quality across the stack
  • Identify opportunities for automation and implement data management tools and frameworks to enhance efficiency and productivity.
  • Stay up-to-date with evolving data protection regulations and industry trends, providing insights and recommendations for maintaining data quality, security, and privacy.
  • Mentor and coach team members, providing guidance and support to enhance their skills and performance.

Your Expertise: 

  • 9+ years of experience with a BS/Masters or 6+ years with a PhD
  • Expertise in SQL and proficient in at least one data engineering language, such as Python or Scala
  • Experience with Superset and Tableau
  • Expertise in large-scale distributed data processing frameworks like Presto or Spark
  • Experience with an ETL framework like Airflow
  • Extensive knowledge of data management concepts, including data modeling, ETL processes, data warehousing, and data governance.
  • Understanding of data security and privacy principles, as well as regulatory compliance requirements (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, ability to distill complex ideas for technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong capability to forge trusted partnerships across working teams

Your Location:

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager. Our job titles may span more than one career level. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.  

Pay Range$243,000—$264,000 USD
