Payments is key for any healthy marketplace, and is just as central to our product at Airbnb. The Payments org at Airbnb is responsible for everything related to settling money in Airbnb’s global marketplace - moving billions of dollars, in 191 countries, across 75 currencies, through a complex ecosystem of payments partners. We build technology that powers Airbnb’s massive daily transaction volume to collect payments from guests, distribute payouts to hosts and everything in between. Our goal is to make the Payment experience on Airbnb as delightful, magical, intuitive, and easy as possible.
Incentives and Stored team serves as the architects behind the multifaceted platforms driving growth and economic campaigns at Airbnb. One of our core focuses lies in crafting innovative solutions that harness the potency of incentives such as discounts, coupons, and credits to propel the company's growth trajectory. In addition, we are spearheading the development of an expansive stored value platform designed to efficiently manage users' stored values, such as credits and cash, as well as its integrations with third-party reward systems such as airline points.

The Difference You Will Make:
As a Staff Engineer and Tech Lead, you are the most seasoned individual contributor on the team. You will be the visionary architect and champion of our expansive Incentives and Stored Value platforms. You will be setting high standards for the entire team across engineering practice, architecture design, technical excellence, and prioritization. You will be leading by example in delivering results at these high standards on a daily basis. You will be empowering the entire team to continuously perfect capabilities, and consistently execute at the highest level. As a mentor in both technical and professional development, you will be playing a crucial role in the growth of many talented software engineers.
A Typical Day:
- Architect and lead the development of our next generation Incentives and Stored Value systems.
- Work closely with Product, Design, Policy, Operations and other cross-functional partners as part of a globally distributed team, to define and ship impactful features. Present product and technical deep dives to key stakeholders.
- Lead and mentor engineers — both inside and outside your immediate team.
- Advocate for and participate in efforts to advance Airbnb’s engineering processes and technical foundations. Drive systemic improvements by identifying patterns to streamline development, reduce toil and increase technical quality and operational excellence over time.
Your Expertise:
- A track record of 9+ years in the software development industry within a fast-paced tech environment.
- BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent work experience
- Experience with Payments Systems is highly desirable
- Proficiency in one or more back-end server languages such as Java, Ruby, Go, C++, etc.
- Demonstrated excellence in designing architectural patterns for high-scale distributed products/services, including well-crafted APIs, robust data pipelines, and efficient algorithms.
- Embrace an end-to-end ownership mentality, fostering collaboration across team boundaries.
- Passionate about cultivating strong relationships with engineering and product partners.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, making informed trade-offs to balance short-term business needs with long-term technical quality.
Your Location:
This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager. Our job titles may span more than one career level. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
