Engineers at MongoDB collaborate in delivering a one-of-a-kind, cloud scale, performant, and popular developer data platform. The Builds and Verifications Team at MongoDB is a part of a collective Developer Productivity group that helps developers innovate and iterate with speed and confidence. Specifically, the Builds and Verifications Team designs, implements, integrates, and maintains the tools, frameworks, and testing strategies that help MongoDB’s engineers ensure their products deploy with the highest measures of correctness, quality, and performance.

We’re looking for an individual who has a deep empathy for engineering teams, cares strongly about quality code and products, and effectively scaling development. Specifically if you are passionate about distributed systems testing (both performance and correctness), elegant and robust software design, and improving the developer feedback loop with speed and ease - this role is for you!

This role can be based out of any office or remotely in North America however you will be required to work west coast hours and regularly interface with teams in Australia.

 

Position Expectations:
  • Collaborate to create a vision for how MongoDB should meet our correctness and performance goals
  • Technically lead teams in ideation and delivery of features and products that enable achieving our correctness and performance goals
  • Take ownership of large areas of performance and correctness testing infrastructure
  • Produce and execute on strategies that reduce technical debt through iterative and strategic quality of life improvements
  • Meaningfully contribute to cohesive strategies to enable the development organization to write code with confidence using the right tool for the job
  • Be hands-on in coding solutions for the many challenging problems
  • Play an active role mentoring and growing other developers
  • Show deep empathy towards other developers to understand their pain points and provide impactful solutions
  • Onboard quickly and successfully into unfamiliar tools and systems
  • Collaborate productively with colleagues at all stages of project lifecycle (ideation, requirements gathering, design, execution, and delivery)

 

Our ideal candidate will have:
  • 8+ years of experience on teams building extremely high availability solutions
  • Meaningful hands-on Python (or related language) programming experience in a developer productivity or related role
  • Meaningful experience building and maintaining correctness and performance testing frameworks focused on large and/or distributed systems
  • Strong experience and knowledge of correctness and performance testing techniques focused on distributed systems
  • A track record for mentoring and growing team members of all levels
  • A proven ability to set and execute the vision for projects that deliver clear measurable value for the business
  • An appetite for continuous learning and improvement
  • A deep empathy and eagerness to understand and solve customer problems
  • A proven track record of ownership and drive from idea generation though idea execution
  • Experience working with remote teams

 

Bonus points if the candidate has experience with:
  • Software ecosystems that contain and routinely run a large number of tests, from unit-level through end-to-end
  • Database (or other large distributed system) integration testing frameworks
  • Database (or other large distributed system) performance testing frameworks
  • A demonstrated expertise of solid UX-focused design of CLIs for scalability and maintainability
  • Test fuzzing
  • Locust (or other performance testing frameworks)
  • TLA+ and its applications
  • C++, Java, and/or Go
  • Sanitizers and other static analysis tooling
  • Kubernetes testing

 

Success Measures
  • Within 1 month, you will have completed several small engineering tasks. You will also have a very high-level understanding of the developer experience for our customer teams at MongoDB. You are able to solve most bugs and have made contributions to various codebases.
  • Within 3 months, you will have core contributions to at least one feature. You will have a good understanding of the team's mission and goals. You will have identified projects and areas to build upon to help meet correctness and performance goals. You will have landed many improvements by making contributions as well as delegating tasks when appropriate.
  • In 6 months, you will have led at least one major change that has demonstrably improved our infrastructure. You have been able to demonstrate team members of all skill levels are improving due to your leadership. You have earned the trust of our internal customers and can drive toward the best solutions in cross functional meetings. You are trusted to make large design decisions that majorly change our internal direction.
  • In 12 months, you will be a clear leader on the team. You will have designed and led many projects. You are trusted to solve the most complex problems and are comfortable navigating the organization in order to deliver value. You have laid out a vision for the future and we are already starting to reap benefits from the direction you are setting. You have meaningfully reduced maintenance costs for the tools we manage as well as made them significantly more impactful.

MongoDB’s base salary range for this role is posted below. Compensation at the time of offer is unique to each candidate and based on a variety of factors such as skill set, experience, qualifications, and work location. Salary is one part of MongoDB’s total compensation and benefits package. Other benefits for eligible employees may include: equity, participation in the employee stock purchase program, flexible paid time off, 20 weeks fully-paid gender-neutral parental leave, fertility and adoption assistance, 401(k) plan, mental health counseling, access to transgender-inclusive health insurance coverage, and health benefits offerings. Please note, the base salary range listed below and the benefits in this paragraph are only applicable to U.S.-based candidates.

MongoDB’s base salary range for this role in the U.S. is:$137,000—$270,000 USD
