 We’re looking for a Team Lead – Backend & Data Infrastructure. This role will report to our R&D Director, Fundations.

We’re looking for a hands-on Team Lead to guide a talented group of backend engineers building the core infrastructure that powers our company’s data-driven products. This role combines strong technical depth with leadership, you’ll design and build scalable backend systems, mentor engineers, and drive cross-team initiatives that make our data and infrastructure more robust, efficient, and future-proof.

You’ll be at the intersection of backend engineering and data, ensuring our systems scale seamlessly, our data is accurate and accessible, and our teams are empowered to deliver business impact faster.

So, what will you be doing all day?

  • Lead & Mentor: Manage a team of backend engineers, setting direction, coaching team members, and fostering a culture of ownership, collaboration, and technical excellence.
  • Architect & Build: Design and implement scalable backend services, libraries, and data pipelines that are reusable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Data Leadership: Oversee integration of large-scale data systems into backend flows. Drive best practices for data modeling, data versioning, lineage, and governance.Partner with data engineering to ensure reliable, high-quality data powering our applications.
  • Improve Developer Experience: Build and maintain tools that streamline workflows and accelerate delivery across product teams
  • .AI & Innovation: Lead adoption of AI-powered development tools (for code generation, testing, debugging) and explore emerging technologies like AI agents for engineering and data workflows.
  • Cross-Org Projects: Drive infrastructure and data initiatives that span multiple teams — improving reliability, scalability, observability, and developer velocity.
  • Operational Excellence: Ensure system stability through monitoring, alerting, and incident management, and resolve complex production issues.
  • Shape the Future: Contribute to and evolve our architecture to support rapid development and data-driven scaling needs.

This is the perfect job for someone who:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of backend development experience, including 2+ years in a leadership or mentorship role.
  • Proven experience leading engineering teams and delivering complex, cross-team initiatives.
  • Strong coding skills in one or more backend languages (C#, Python, Go, or Java).
  • Deep understanding of data systems:
    • Data modeling, pipelines, and large-scale data processing (batch & streaming).
    • Experience with data lakes, warehouses, or open table formats (Parquet, Delta, Iceberg, etc.).
    • Familiarity with governance, lineage, and catalog tools.
  • Experience building large-scale infrastructure or web applications.
  • Strong operational mindset: scaling systems, improving observability, solving bottlenecks.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and monitoring systems.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to influence across teams and stakeholders.
