The Opportunity:

Sumo Logic is seeking a dynamic and experienced Vice President of Engineering & Country Manager to lead our growing engineering presence in India while also overseeing critical global engineering functions. This is a unique and impactful role that combines strategic leadership of our India site with direct responsibility for several key engineering teams: Platform Engineering, Quality Engineering, Product Demo Engineering, Release Engineering, Application Security, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), and Product SRE. 

As the Country Manager for India, you will be the senior-most leader on the ground, fostering a vibrant and high-performing culture aligned with Sumo Logic's global values. You will be responsible for the overall success and growth of the India site, including talent development, employee engagement, and operational excellence.

In your capacity as VP of Engineering, you will drive the strategy and execution for your globally distributed engineering teams, ensuring the quality, security, reliability, and efficient delivery of our industry-leading SaaS platform. You will also serve as a crucial liaison between our Engineering organization and our Sales and Customer Success teams, particularly within the India and Asia Pacific (APAC) regions, to ensure customer needs are deeply understood and effectively addressed.

This role requires a strong technical background, exceptional leadership skills, proven experience managing large and diverse engineering teams, and the ability to build strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Country Management (India):
    • Serve as the senior leader for the Sumo Logic India site, responsible for its overall success and growth.
    • Cultivate a strong and positive company culture aligned with Sumo Logic's global values.
    • Lead talent acquisition and retention efforts for the India site, building a high-performing and engaged workforce.
    • Oversee site operations, ensuring a productive and collaborative work environment.
    • Act as a key representative for Sumo Logic in the local India tech community.
    • Partner with People/HR teams to drive recruitment, talent development, and workforce planning in the region.
    • Foster a strong, inclusive culture that aligns with Sumo Logic’s values and mission.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Product, Engineering, Sales, HR, Customer Success) to ensure smooth local execution of company objectives.
    • Serve as a key decision-maker for in-country initiatives, ensuring efficiency, compliance, and operational success.
    • Advocate for local teams within the global leadership structure, ensuring they have the resources needed to excel.
  • Engineering Leadership:
    • Serve as the product development executive representative for Sumo Logic in India and the Asia Pacific region, ensuring local operations align with global strategy.
    • Provide strategic direction and technical leadership for the Platform Engineering, Quality Engineering, Product Demo Engineering, Release Engineering, Application Security, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), and Product SRE teams.
    • Drive innovation and continuous improvement within these engineering functions, ensuring best practices are adopted and consistently applied.
    • Foster a culture of quality, security, reliability, and operational excellence across all teams.
    • Collaborate closely with Product Management and other Engineering leaders to align engineering roadmaps with product strategy and business objectives.
    • Oversee the development and execution of robust test strategies, release processes, security protocols, and reliability initiatives.
    • Mentor and develop engineering leaders and individual contributors within your organization.
    • Manage budgets and resources effectively for your engineering teams.
  • Customer Liaison (India & Asia Pacific):
    • Serve as a primary point of contact and escalation for Sales and Customer Success teams regarding technical matters in the India and APAC regions.
    • Collaborate with customer-facing teams to understand customer needs, challenges, and priorities, and translate them into actionable insights for the Engineering organization.
    • Participate in key customer engagements, providing technical expertise and building strong relationships.
    • Ensure the Product Demo Engineering team develops compelling and effective features that resonate with customers.
    • Facilitate communication and alignment between Engineering and customer-facing teams to ensure customer satisfaction.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • B.S. in Computer Sciences or related discipline (M.S., or Ph.D. is a plus).
  • Minimum 15+ years of industry experience with a proven track record of ownership, delivery, and operational excellence.
  • Minimum 8+ years in management and leadership roles
  • Minimum 5+ years in a role that included managing multiple teams and other managers.
  • Experienced with operations, customer facing communications and meeting with customers.
  • Experience being responsible for key SLOs of a cloud-based SaaS: availability, uptime, performance, and security.
  • Experience in multi-threaded programming and distributed systems.
  • Object-oriented programming experience, for example in Java, Scala, Ruby, or C++.
  • Experience with high volumes of data using the latest technologies such as Kafka, Kubernetes and Docker.
  • Agile software development experience (test-driven development, iterative and incremental development). Experience in big data and/or 24x7 commercial service is highly desirable.
  • Hands-on experience with public cloud Infrastructure-as-a-service and Platform-as-a-service offerings - Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, etc.
