Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer and a member of the Legal Leadership Team, we are hiring a Vice President and Business Integrity Officer to join Elastic in our fast growing, truly globally distributed company! This position will be leading the Ethics and Compliance, Data Privacy, Employment Legal and Litigation Functions (Business Integrity) working cross functionally across the Legal team and the business. The role is ideal for a self-sufficient and resourceful executive, and we will consider candidates located anywhere in the United States, with some preference for individuals located in the Bay Area, Austin or Washington DC Area. What You Will Be Doing:
  • Counsel team members at all levels on the evolving regulatory and compliance environment to lead the Business Integrity program, ensuring that Elastic operates with the highest integrity, while moving forward with velocity;
  • The Business Integrity Officer is the architect and steward of the enterprise compliance strategy, structure and processes. For your areas of responsibility, you will lead responsibility for compliance with relevant regulation, relying on the resources available to you across the legal department and the company, holding everyone accountable for their obligations to the program;

At Elastic, we recognize that Business Integrity is an integral part of business confidence – a such, you will ensure that the internal controls policies, procedures, corrective actions and continuous improvements are made as required to support the company in achieving its growth objectives.

This leader provides reasonable assurance to the Executive Management and the Board of Directors, including the Audit Committee that there are effective and efficient policies and procedures in place and that these are well understood by all employees so that we have confidence that the company is prepared for and aligned with relevant regulatory requirements. In this capacity, this leader:

  • maintains current knowledge of laws and regulations, keeping abreast of recent changes;
  • develops the annual compliance work plan that reflects the highest risks that will be monitored by the compliance function as determined by conducting a risk assessment (annually or as needed), using an enterprise-wide approach (in collaboration with Internal Audit and other risk functions); leads guidance to the company on matters relating to area of responsibility;
  • responds to government investigations and queries as the lead contact where relevant (with the CLO and other team members as needed);
  • manages all disputes, pre-litigation and litigation and all employment legal work, together with team counsel and outside counsel, seeking opportunities to streamline and enable Elastic’s distributed working model;
  • oversees and monitors the implementation of a risk-based compliance framework, aligned to Elastic's Source Code;
  • develops, coordinates and participates in a multifaceted educational and training program that focuses on the elements of the compliance framework, and seeks to ensure that all appropriate employees and management are knowledgeable of, and follow pertinent government standards;
  • develops materials at an institutional level for distribution to all employees to enhance awareness of compliance activities, including building awareness and driving data privacy by design and default and ethics as a way of working; works closely with the HR Team to ensure employment compliance practices are embedded as a way of work;
  • independently (together with the core investigations team, and in line with the company investigations guideline) investigates and acts on matters related to compliance, including the flexibility to design and coordinate internal investigations (e.g., responding to reports of problems, 'hot-line' calls, or suspected violations) and any resulting corrective actions.

Furthermore, as the company lead for the Data Privacy Program, the Integrity Officer acts as the Champion and lead strategist for global data privacy compliance and provides forward-leaning business customer advocacy on data privacy to ensure customer and vendor success. In particular this leader will ensure:

  • a positive culture for data protection within the company by driving a program that is streamlined, informed, well documented, and expertly administered;
  • as a data company, the Integrity Officer will lead a data privacy organization that ensures that employees are educated on important data protection requirements relevant to the company’s business, it’s products, and its internal compliance requirements through training, inclusive activities (such as champion programs, education and training and expert advice);
  • policies and procedures, documentation and key forms will be drafted to reflect current regulation and company practices, in consultation with key stakeholders;
  • your responsibilities will include maintaining accurate records for all data processing activities and will serve as the point of contact for relevant authorities;
  • you will proactively ensure that audits are conducted (including maximising internal resources) to ensure compliance and to address potential issues.
What You Bring Along:
  • Demonstrated ability advising technology companies on business integrity and cross functional compliance issues, either in house or at a law firm (at least 15+ years).
  • General understanding and ability to learn about data protection laws and regulations relevant to SaaS/Cloud, Licensed/Open Source, Managed Packaged and AI technology.
  • Excellent judgment and the ability to balance legal risks with business strategy, including scaling quickly in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to flexibly prioritize and handle change and ambiguity.
  • Enthusiasm for cross-functional collaboration and teamwork.

Compensation for this role is in the form of base salary.  This role does not have a variable compensation component.  

The typical starting salary range for new hires in this role is listed below.  In select locations (including Seattle WA, Los Angeles CA, the San Francisco Bay Area CA, and the New York City Metro Area), an alternate range may apply as specified below. 

These ranges represent the lowest to highest salary we reasonably and in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting.  We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the ranges may be modified in the future.  

An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Elastic believes that employees should have the opportunity to share in the value that we create together for our shareholders. Therefore, in addition to cash compensation, this role is currently eligible to participate in Elastic's stock program.  Our total rewards package also includes a company-matched 401k with dollar-for-dollar matching up to 6% of eligible earnings, along with a range of other benefits offered with a holistic emphasis on employee well-being.
