The position will be based within the Mozilla Foundation’s Insights team, which produces original research and other publications focused on trustworthy AI to inform strategic decision-making and fuel Mozilla’s policy and advocacy work. In this role, you will work closely with a range of teams across Mozilla’s different entities, particularly Mozilla’s policy and advocacy teams. 

To advance Mozilla’s vision in the AI policy space, the pan-Mozilla policy team is pursuing an ambitious multi-year AI policy strategy. To strengthen the small team tasked with implementing this strategy, Mozilla Foundation is seeking a skilled AI Policy Program Manager to help lead and manage our initiatives in the constantly evolving field of public policy development in artificial intelligence. This role involves coordinating with cross-functional teams across Mozilla to develop and implement AI strategies that align with Mozilla's mission of ensuring an open and accessible internet.

 

As an AI Policy, Program Manager at Mozilla Foundation, you will…

Program and Project Management (approximately 50%)

  • Manage and take ownership of AI-related projects in Mozilla’s policy function from conception to completion, ensuring they meet quality, time, and budget constraints.
  • Track and document key deadlines, deliverables, and dependencies within the team.
  • Track budget expenditures across projects and assure compliance with all Mozilla policies and procedures.
  • Work with cross-functional internal teams across Mozilla’s entities as well as with external partners and other collaborators to ensure the successful execution of projects in Mozilla’s policy function.

Policy Advocacy and Analysis (25%)

  • Support Mozilla’s policy advocacy and engage in policy discussions centering responsible AI practices and policy in line with Mozilla's values.
  • Stay abreast of the latest trends in AI and AI policy and assess legislative and regulatory initiatives across a variety of different countries and international forums.

Community Engagement (15%):

  • Facilitate and foster community building efforts around Mozilla's AI initiatives, engaging with partners from industry, academia, and civil society developers , users, and other partners.
  • Plan and organize events designed to convene and engage with this community.
  • Manage the distribution of key organizational and team publications and programs to external partners.

Reporting and internal communication (10%): 

  • Help prepare detailed reports and regular updates on the progress and outcomes of AI projects and initiatives related to AI policy.
  • Develop updates and presentations for executives and broader audiences through reports, presentations, blogs, etc.
Your Professional Profile:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or its equivalent in computer science, AI, law, public policy, or a related field with 3-4 years of full time experience. 
  • Proven experience in program and/or project management, particularly related to tech policy or AI-related projects.
  • Strong understanding of AI technologies and their societal impacts as well as a keen interest in tech and AI policy around the globe. A familiarity with the open source and/or digital rights communities and with issue areas such as online privacy or competition policy are a plus.
  • Experience tracking projects using various tools, such as Asana, Trello, Airtable (No specific tool experience required.)
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and collaborator management skills, including in an international context.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment and to work remotely in a globally distributed and cross-functional team.
  • Ability to prototype projects quickly and iterate towards a big goal
  • Ability to adapt to last-minute asks and changing timelines and priorities with flexibility and good humor.
  • Experience with budget tracking and oversight. 
  • Experience working in a policy context preferred.

 

Salary and Benefits Information:

The Mozilla Foundation is dedicated to fair and equitable compensation for our staff. We aim to pay a competitive and market-based salary based on the responsibilities and requirements of the role. We do not ask for, or take into account, salary histories in our offer process.

The starting salary ranges for this role are listed below. These four countries are where we most commonly employ staff.

  • Canada: [$116,910 - $131,316] [target salary offer - $120,507]
  • US: [$86,600 - $97,271] [target salary offer - $89,265]

Some regions fall into a higher salary market and this is reflected in the example ranges below:
