We believe in the everyday hero. Those who have the courage to follow their passion and who have the strength and determination to realise their dreams. Small business owners are at the heart of all we do, so we're creating powerful, easy-to-use financial solutions to help them run their businesses. With a founder’s mentality and a 'team-first’ attitude, our diverse teams across Europe, South America and the United States work together to ensure that small business owners can be successful doing what they love.

At SumUp, the Global Bank team builds the core infrastructure and services that give merchants a digital bank account, helping small businesses manage their money easily and reliably.

In the Transfers Gateway squad, you’ll work on the backbone that connects SumUp’s internal systems with external financial networks across Europe and the UK. The squad owns critical integrations with payment schemes and operates a large portfolio of production services that must be reliable, performant and secure.

As a Backend Engineer, you’ll work on modernising existing systems, building and operating reliable backend services, and collaborating closely with your team to deliver high‑quality solutions in a regulated banking environment. You’ll focus on well‑defined problems while growing your impact and ownership within the Transfers domain.

If you enjoy building dependable systems, learning how large‑scale banking platforms work, and contributing to a team that values quality and collaboration, we’d love to hear from you. Join our Vilnius Team today (Vilnius office).

Our Tech Stack includes: Golang, Kotlin, Java, Elixir, AWS, Kafka, PostgreSQL, Docker, Kubernetes etc.

What You’ll Do

  • Build and maintain production backend services, contributing to their delivery, observability, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Own and deliver well‑defined tasks and features, and contribute to larger projects within the team’s domain.
  • Contribute to technical design and implementation, following established architectural patterns and best practices.
  • Improve service reliability and quality by writing tests, enhancing monitoring, and following established delivery pipelines.
  • Support the operation of the systems you work on by participating in on‑call rotations, incident response, and learning from post‑incident reviews.
  • Apply a backend and systems perspective during refinement, raising questions about risks, dependencies, and edge cases.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, QA, and other engineers to deliver end‑to‑end transfer and banking capabilities.

You’ll be great for this role if you

  • Have experience building backend services in a modern environment and supporting them in production.
  • Can take a clearly defined problem and implement a solution independently, seeking guidance when needed.
  • Are comfortable working with cloud‑based systems, containerized workloads, and automated delivery pipelines.
  • Have experience writing and maintaining automated tests and care about code quality.
  • Understand the fundamentals of system architecture, data modelling, and API design, and are eager to deepen this knowledge.
  • Are curious about how your work fits into the broader system and product experience.
  • Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders.

Any of the following would be considered a plus

  • Exposure to banking, payments, or financial systems, especially in regulated environments.
  • Experience supporting systems with production traffic, including participating in incident response.
  • Use of AI‑assisted tools to improve development speed, learning, or code quality.
