Corporate Counsel, Public Sector

Accelerate your career by joining Okta as a member of our Public Sector Team! As Corporate Counsel, Public Sector you’ll be reporting to the Senior Corporate Counsel, Public Sector and will have the opportunity to help build a scalable global Public Sector practice. You will work independently and in concert with several key leaders while providing frontline counseling in support of Okta’s Public Sector business. 

To succeed in this role, you will need to use excellent business judgment and critical thinking to provide pragmatic and effective legal solutions aligned with business objectives while mitigating legal risks. To be successful in our remote or hybrid work environment, you should be able to work independently as well as collaboratively in view of evolving business conditions and goals. You will work closely with key internal business and technology partners on various strategic and tactical legal matters relating to the development and implementation of Okta’s Public Sector solutions. You will also support the introduction of products and features in new and existing Okta regulated environments.

 

What you’ll be doing 

  • Provide legal support to Okta’s expanding Public Sector - including U.S. and international markets - by helping to enhance the associated compliance frameworks and processes 

  • Advise and educate the Public Sector teams on new and emerging policies and regulations impacting cloud services providers 

  • Coordinate with cross-functional legal counsel to monitor and ensure product compliance with U.S. and international regulatory requirements

  • Collaborate with marketing counsel and review Public Sector content for accuracy and completeness

  • Work jointly with Okta’s Public Sector teams on a day-to-day basis and provide actionable, timely legal advice. Partner with GTM and Sales teams to advise on terms and Okta’s regulated cloud service offerings

  • Participate and counsel product managers, security, engineering, and compliance teams through all stages of the Public Sector product lifecycle with respect to applicable regulations, compliance frameworks, and Public Sector certifications and authorizations processes 

 

What you’ll bring to the role

  • 5+ years legal experience, with at least 2 years experience providing counsel on Public Sector issues and activities (Military Judge Advocate and U.S. Federal Civilian service attorney advisor experience a plus).

  • Experience supporting IT products, with a specificity in SaaS product offerings

  • In-depth understanding of relevant U.S. Federal, state and local regulations affecting the technology sector, including: cybersecurity, product, artificial intelligence (AI) and Intellectual Property (IP)

  • Familiarity with international regulations and policies affecting SaaS companies and demonstrated ability to analyze and distill international regulatory requirements related to IT products

  • A self-motivated individual who takes initiative and is comfortable rolling up their sleeves to understand and independently advise on issues of first impression

  • Flexibility and eagerness to work hard in fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines

  • Team oriented with a sense of humor

  • Undergraduate degree in a technical field a plus and a J.D. from a highly-regarded institution, bar admission

Below is the annual base salary range for candidates located in California, Colorado, New York and Washington. Your actual base salary will depend on factors such as your skills, qualifications, experience, and work location. In addition, Okta offers equity (where applicable), bonus, and benefits, including health, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), flexible spending account, and paid leave (including PTO and parental leave) in accordance with our applicable plans and policies. The annual base salary range for this position for candidates located in California (excluding San Francisco Bay Area), Colorado, New York, and Washington is between:$136,000—$204,000 USD
