The Difference You Will Make:

Airbnb is seeking a business-oriented attorney with experience advising government affairs and public policy teams on industry legislation, regulatory litigation, and product compliance. As a Policy Counsel, your primary focus will be advising Airbnb’s Public Policy, Regulatory Product, and Business stakeholders on a range of proactive policy initiatives and on state and local legislative, and product compliance issues across the Western United States (e.g., platform immunity/obligations, short-term rental host laws, zoning, and tax).

You must have excellent judgment and be deft in balancing legal risks with policy priorities and strategy with a proven ability to learn new areas of law and function independently in a demanding fast-paced environment. We’re looking for a highly adaptable and collaborative self-starter who can handle ambiguity, and shifting priorities with flexibility, patience, poise, and humor.

A Typical Day:

  • Advise Airbnb’s Public Policy function as they advance policy and regulatory priorities including providing legislative counseling, legal analysis, strategic planning guidance, and tactical solutions.
  • Become a trusted partner across Public Policy, Regulatory Product, and Business teams by providing focused and pragmatic advice on the implementation and impact of laws to product, business, and other relevant company teams.
  • Represent Airbnb in discussions with legislators and regulators regarding proposed and existing regulations affecting the business.

Your Expertise:

  • Barred in a US state, preferably CA, or eligible to register as California Registered In-House Counsel.
  • JD and 5-8 years of relevant experience advising companies on federal, state and local legislation and regulations (e.g., risk assessment, legislative drafting, legislative amendments, regulatory compliance solutions, advocacy materials, etc.).
  • Rigorous analytical skills with the ability to condense complex legal advice into clear and succinct oral and written advice. Someone who is intellectually curious and is comfortable challenging the advice and opinions of others, and being challenged themselves.
  • Pragmatic and self motivated team player who has a flexible and proactive mindset. Someone with a proven ability to work both collaboratively and autonomously, who thrives in fast-paced, dynamic environments, and is comfortable with change, ambiguity, and risk.
  • Comfort with making decisive risk-based decisions, often urgently and independently. Someone who is curious, resourceful, and a self-starter.
  • A solid working knowledge of the Airbnb platform, evolving product lines, and competitive landscape. A passion for our business with a strong knowledge and keen interest in travel.
  • Empathetic with strong ethical judgment. Someone who identifies strongly with Airbnb’s core values and whose approach to work embodies those values.
