About the role 

At Urban Sports Club our aim is to create a world where everyone enjoys doing sports, whether that is in the gym, studio, outside in the park/ beach or from the comfort of your own home. We are ambitious in our plans to grow and cater to a wider user audience, B2B and B2B2C users alike. Our goal is to reach 1 Million customers and data sits in the middle of it all. While our Data Platform engineering team empowers consumers of the data, our Data Analytics team supports with delivering customer insights, in-depth analytics, and delivery of machine learning products to support our Product Development department in our goal to serve personalized experience to our base of members, partners, and corporate users in the near future. 

We are looking for an experienced Data Science Manager to join our Product Data Analytics team and to work closely with Analytics Cluster, Data Platform team, Tech and Business teams.

You will be responsible for helping us scale our personalisation efforts inside our products and elevate deep-dive analyses with a solid data science foundation. 

Your responsibilities
  • Shape, lead, and serve a team of Data Analysts and Data Scientists at Urban Sports through hiring, coaching, mentoring, and hands-on career development. 
  • You will report to the Director of Data Engineering and will work very closely with the Data Platform team that consists of MLops and Data engineers alike.
  • Through your expertise help the team deliver best-in-class analytics insights and steer AI and machine learning journey. 
  • Contribute to data maturity and experimentation culture by supporting A/B testing efforts amongst teams. 
  • Liaison with Business and Product stakeholders to identify opportunities for machine learning products adoption inside our organization. 
  • Work alongside the product development leadership to foster a culture of continuous feedback, mutual accountability, and clear ownership.
  • Partner with the Director of Data Engineering, Engineering, and Product managers to align and create short and long-term objectives based on team goals.
  • Lead by example: You are still hands-on and love writing code and doing model development. We expect our managers to spend 30% of their time doing hands-on technology work.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines to ensure customer needs are identified and met.
  • Collaborate with and challenge your fellow analysts and scientists to generate new ideas and innovative solutions that will best serve the Urban Sports ecosystem.
What you need to succeed 
  • You are an experienced data scientist who still contributes to the code, but also maintains an awareness of the bigger picture.
  • Strong data science background in working with Python, Machine Learning or AI topics. Check out our Techradar which includes technologies we apply for data. Ideally, you have worked with one of the following: User Clustering algorithms, recommendation systems, time series forecasting, churn prediction, sentiment analysis, etc.
  • Previous experience managing analytics or data science teams successfully or driving projects in the capacity of a people leader.
  • You are a humble leader, who can motivate a team and drive them to their full potential.
  • You are a self-organized individual, with focus and the ability to prioritize your workload using business data and metrics.
  • You thrive in a fast-paced release-focused environment with the focus on delivering quickly and efficiently, and then iterating continuously.
  • Your communication skills in English allow you to express technical concepts to stakeholders clearly and convincingly no matter their professional background
