About the team

Deliveroo’s Experience Team defines how our customers, riders, restaurants, and employees interact with Deliveroo's products and services end-to-end. Based throughout London and the greater UK, our diverse team has global impact. We cook up accessible, localised, and inclusive products for customers in Singapore, riders in France, grocery chains in Qatar, restaurant kitchens in Dubai—and beyond.

We're hiring a Senior Design Technologist to join our company headquarters in London. The open role is remote, in-person, or hybrid—whatever works best for you. This is a fixed-term contract role, and it covers for a teammate currently on parental leave. You will report into Senior Design leadership within our Design Systems team. Your manager is located in The Netherlands and your design counterpart is located in London. We communicate regularly via Slack and Google Meet to keep in touch and stay aligned.

The Role

The Design Systems team sits within the broader Brand & Experience team within Deliveroo’s Tech & Product organisation. The Design System team is responsible for providing the systems and tools that enable our designers and engineers to efficiently create best-in-class experiences. Our work ensures Deliveroo products are cohesive, accessible, and easy-to-use. Our far-reaching impact spans across various Deliveroo products, craft disciplines, and technologies. That means the work you do will have a big impact.

We’re looking for a fixed-term contract Senior Design technologist to strengthen the bridge between engineering and design disciplines. The ideal candidate will be part web engineer, one part designer, and one part systems thinker. You’ll collaborate closely with the design and engineering teams to deliver high-impact tools and to identify ways to improve our design systems, code components, and prototyping assets. We are a hybrid workplace and you will report in to senior design leadership.

What you will work on

The products and tools we work on are as diverse as the users we serve, and we’re fortunate to be in a company where design is a first-class citizen.

On a day-to-day basis, you will:

  • Collaborate closely with our Staff Product Designer to identify and improve pain points in the designer and developer workflow,
  • Do hands-on work within Deliveroo’s web codebase to implement design tokens and put safeguards in place to ensure code quality is upheld,
  • Build high-quality, accessible web components, then document how to use them and communicate their existence across the web engineering team,
  • Communicate regularly across design and development disciplines to keep people up-to-date on the latest Design System components, best practices, and guidelines,
  • Ideate and build Figma plugins and efficiency tooling to automate repetitive tasks while maintaining design quality,
  • Create processes which help operationalize and bring efficiencies to the engineering and design orgs,
  • Interact with engineers to define and socialise technical approaches for our systems, code libraries, and documentation platforms.
This role is for you if you:
  • Care about accessibility and design quality
  • Sweat UI implementation details
  • Care about doing things right
  • Look at everything through the lens of scalability and impact
  • Are fantastic at communicating your thoughts and decisions with non-technical stakeholders
  • Can abstract away technical complexity and create ‘magic’ through simplicity
  • Geek out about what Figma and custom plugins can do for teams
  • Enjoy crafting well-written documentation
  • Care about User Experience and take the initiative to find and fix UX problems.
  • Have a good sense of humour!
  • Have a great appetite (we love eating!)
Requirements

We value intellectual humility, eagerness to learn, and the ability to move quickly while being pragmatic about our decisions. But above all else, we're looking for unique personalities with varied backgrounds that add something new to our team.

What we're looking for

  • Expert understanding of modern web standards and technical approaches
  • Knowledge of a modern JavaScript frameworks—especially React
  • Exposure to native frameworks (ReactNative, Android, iOS)
  • Experience building scalable code-based design systems and component libraries
  • Experience working in high-growth product companies with an international footprint
  • Knowledge of native platform-specific patterns
  • In-depth knowledge of web performance and accessibility, or comparable skill-sets
  • Familiar with version control systems, shipping processes, QA testing, and code linting

Benefits and Diversity

At Deliveroo we know that people are the heart of the business, and we prioritise their welfare. We believe a great workplace is one that represents the world we live in and how beautifully diverse it can be. That means we have no judgement when it comes to any one of the things that make you who you are—your gender, race, sexuality, religion, or even a secret aversion to coriander. All you need is a passion for (most) food and a desire to deliver high-quality experiences that are built in a scalable way.
