As Google DeepMind’s Director of Internal Communications, you’ll be responsible for architecting an end-to-end internal communications strategy to help employees understand Google DeepMind’s vision, roadmap, achievements and initiatives, ensuring everyone across the company understands how their work connects to our mission. You will lead our internal communications efforts globally, working and advising leadership on the right forum, timing and content to ensure employees are in the know.

The Role

We are looking for a Director of Internal Communications to join the team. You’ll play a critical role in both developing and driving our internal communications strategy, acting as a senior-advisor to our executive team. You’ll develop a deep understanding of Google DeepMind’s goals to lead the strategy and execution for how we optimally plan and strengthen how we communicate internally and through our executive leadership team. You’ll lead, develop and encourage talent across the internal communications team. This role reports to the Head of Global Communications and Marketing.

Key responsibilities:
  • Oversee development and implementation of a comprehensive global internal communications strategy for Google DeepMind (GDM).
  • Serve as a senior counsel on internal communications to GDM's senior leaders and oversee complex planning and delivery across multiple offices/countries, shaping the direction of multiple large work streams.
  • Lead the internal communications team to improve internal communications delivery and further career development.
  • You will develop solutions where precedents may not exist. Architect proactive strategies and programs to respond to key internal challenges before they become hot button issues; bring a long-term lens to our internal comms work to ensure effective balance between day-to-day operations and strategic priorities that are important to advance over months and years.
  • Proactively build strategic relationships and advance cross-functional efforts across Google to advance GDM's internal communications priorities.
  • Build strong internal networks across GDM and Google with senior leaders and key communities to establish perspectives grounded in the organisational context.
  • Establish effective analytics and insights methodologies and tools to inform internal communications
  • As a leader at GDM, you will role model our values authentically, instilling trust with everyone you interact with and building an inclusive and engaging team environment.
About You

You will need to be experienced in leading on internal communications strategies. In addition, you’ll have:

  • Extensive experience as an internal communications leader with significant expertise advising executives on internal comms and engagement. Experience working in highly technical environments and translating research-led innovations into compelling product-focused communications. 
  • Expert knowledge of industry trends, best practices, emerging tactics, measurement and tools, and the external competitive landscape.
  • Proven experience partnering across a global organisation with multiple diverse stakeholders. Ability to architect compelling strategies and ideas, whilst delivering day-to-day activities. 
  • A forward-thinking and innovative approach to anticipate and address new challenges within complex or growing business areas, regions, or issues/topics. 
  • Experience building, evolving, and leading high performing and engaged teams. 
  • Equal parts thinker and doer, with strong management skills and the ability to prioritise and juggle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Experience working in an editorial capacity and on multi-channel campaigns within a communications team. Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills, with strong attention to detail. 
  • Skilled in engagement strategies, content creation and planning, with a strong understanding of AI research and/or tech product landscape.
  • Good domain knowledge and experience of the broader tech sector - global trends, challenges and opportunities - and an interest in tech, science, AI, and social impact. 
  • The ability to react quickly and effectively in response to issues or challenges and demonstrate resilience to change. 
  • Experience using metrics to accurately measure and evaluate the impact of internal comms and make adjustments as needed.
  • Comfortable working across various time zones (MTV, NYC, and LON), business units and organisations. 

In addition, the following would be an advantage: 

  • Experience working with AI or product teams.
  • Experience in a founder-led company.
