Director of Open Banking

The roleGoCardless has been at the forefront of payments for over a decade; as Director of Open Banking you’ll play an essential role in accelerating our progress by developing and implementing our Open Banking payments strategy in the UK, with scope to expand globally e.g. PayTo in Australia, FedNow/RTP in the United States etc
This role will sit in our UKI Group as the largest opportunities for open banking adoption in the next 1-2 years are in the UK. The mission of the UKI Group is to become the leading A2A account provider in the UK, across both Direct Debit & Open Banking. Our open banking products and features, in line with the market, are largely nascent. Your job will be figuring out how to grow them.
You’ll be expected to define our go-to-market approach for Open Banking payments working with a tightly knit group across the UKI GTM, Product, Brand, Policy and others to execute on this.
You will need to be a well-rounded leader who can motivate and enable teams and evangelise real time payments. You’ll have the opportunity to lead at all stages as we take our products to market, so you’ll be equally comfortable pitching GoCardless directly to customers, as you are developing go-to-market strategies.
As the Director for Open Banking you’ll report into the MD, UK&I (also our Chief Customer Officer), with a dotted line to our Chief Product Officer, as well as having close working relationships with product and commercial leaders across the business.
Success will be measured on your ability to support the UKI group achieve its volume ambitions for the forthcoming fiscal year FY25.
What excites you
- Developing the market for GC - Getting us in front of and deals winning deals of strategic value
- External market engagement - acting as a spokesperson on the topic of Open Banking, whilst furthering our brand and presence in the market through industry and event engagement
- Deal handling - quality control over all Open Banking deals to ensure, consistent messaging framework and value positioning across all commercial conversations
- Cross-functional collaboration (especially with product) - helping to shape the Open Banking proposition that will ultimately drive commercial outcomes for the business
- Strong commercial acumen - developing commercial structures (contracting, pricing) that is anchored towards driving volume but also longer term revenue opportunity
- Unlocking new segments - getting hands on in taking customer feedback, using it to define our payments proposition and, ultimately, talking to customers and getting products in their hands, as well as unlocking new segments such as Ecommerce, Gambling etc.
- Partnerships - Helping to acquire Open Banking focused partners as well as creating leverage for them to integrate and embed Open Banking into their overall proposition
What excites us
- Open banking expert - has worked in Open Banking previously, either for an existing provider or in an Open Banking payments capacity at a company
- Strong network to hit the ground running
- Experience developing the market for Open Banking payments - you thrive in commercial environments, whether speaking with industry bodies or pitching to prospects, you love winning new business and closing deals
- Track record of overall strategic direction within the OB space setting and execution as well as success in sales
- Good understanding of the macro payments landscape, extensive experience in real-time bank payments and have strong relationships within the ecosystem
- Exposure to senior leadership - Experience in working with and influencing senior business leaders to get endorsement for your strategies and plans
- An Open Banking all rounder - a well-rounded leader who can motivate and evangelise. You’ll have the opportunity to lead at all stages as we take our products to market, so you’ll be equally comfortable pitching GoCardless directly to customers, as you are developing go-to-market strategy and working with designers, product managers and engineers to develop the best proposition.
