Director, Trust & Safety Policy

We're seeking an experienced Director of Trust & Safety Policy to lead the development and implementation of comprehensive safety policies across Lyft's transportation platform. This role will provide strategic oversight and cross-functional leadership to ensure the safety and trust of our riders, drivers, and communities across all business units including Rideshare and LUS (Lyft Urban Services)
Responsibilities:- Strategic Leadership & Policy Development
- Act as the foremost leader of Safety Policy strategy and development at Lyft, setting a vision, direction and cohesive strategy for a comprehensive end-to-end policy suite and the associated cross-functional stewardship required to enforce these policies
- Serve as a senior member of the Safety and Customer Care leadership team, providing insight and support to peers in product, ops, and analytics
- Lead the strategy, governance, development, and evolution of safety policies (eligibility, conduct, and content) that protect our community while supporting business growth
- Design and oversee a "test, measure, iterate" approach to policy development, working closely with the Safety Collective to continuously evaluate and improve policies based on customer feedback and data-driven insights.
- Design and maintain a unified safety policy framework across all business lines, ensuring consistency, fairness, and proportionality in enforcement
- Develop sophisticated policies for new products and features, including AI responsible use policies and net new policies to govern novel platform interaction types
- Ensure strong implementation of policies through tightly connected partnership with Safety Operations and Shared Services
- Cross-functional Collaboration
- Partner with Legal, Public Policy, Operations, and Product teams to ensure policies are industry leading, scalable, and operationally realistic
- Shepherd the policy review process and work with partners cross-functionally to schedule the timely rollout of new policies and policy changes
- Partner with Safety Operations, Data Analytics, and Community Safety Product to manage safety incident data collection and quality standards (e.g. taxonomy creation, QA, and ongoing management).
- Work closely with Community Safety Product to integrate safety considerations into product development
- Collaborate with the Safety Advisory Council to validate policy approaches and gather external perspectives
- Lead policy decisions for safety-related incidents and provide strategic guidance during crisis situations
- Policy Implementation & Measurement
- Establish clear harms taxonomies for platform violations and harmful behaviors
- Act as the business owner for the results of policies; define and measure effectiveness against KPIs through multivariate experiments to better understand behavior patterns/trends; iterate to enhance all areas of policy and implementation.
- Work with Safety Operations to drive the development of automated enforcement systems and human moderation processes
- Create frameworks for measuring policy effectiveness and impact
- Lead data-driven policy enhancement initiatives using user feedback and operational insights
- People and Team Management
- Serve as people manager to a team of policy professionals with varying levels of policy experience; coach and mentor direct reports to support their career development and drive safety impact for Lyft customers
- Ensure a culture of empathy, integrity, and commitment to community safety
- Consider how to scale team impact; work within your team and cross-functionally to drive improvements
- Risk Management & Compliance
- Ensure policies meet evolving regulatory requirements across different jurisdictions
- Develop incident response protocols and crisis management frameworks
- Oversee the creation of safety reporting systems and compliance documentation
- Guide the development of quality assurance programs for policy enforcement
- 10+ years of experience in Trust & Safety, including at least 6 years in Trust & Safety policy development specifically
- 5+ years of management experience, including managing people, and additionally leading cross-functional teams
- Proven track record of developing and implementing safety policies at scale
- Excellence in stakeholder management and executive communication
- Excellent writing skills
- Bachelor's degree in relevant field (e.g., Public Policy, Business, Law)

- Understanding of transportation industry regulations and safety requirements
- Experience in mobility or transportation industry
- Background in product policy development for technology platforms
- Knowledge of AI/ML applications in safety systems

This role will be in-office on a hybrid schedule — Team Members will be expected to work in the San Francisco office 3 days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Additionally, hybrid roles have the flexibility to work from anywhere for up to 4 weeks per year. #Hybrid
The expected base pay range for this position in the San Francisco area is $203,000 - $253,750. Salary ranges are dependent on a variety of factors, including qualifications, experience and geographic location. Range is not inclusive of potential equity offering, bonus or benefits.
