The opportunity 

At Urban Sports Club our aim is to create a world where everyone enjoys doing sports, whether that is in the gym, studio, outside in the park/ beach or from the comfort of your own home. We are ambitious in our plans to grow and cater to a wider user audience, B2B and B2B2C users alike. Our goal is to reach 1 Million customers and data sits in the middle of it all. Our Data Platform empowers software developers and data engineers, delivers customer insights and reporting and aims to serve personalized experience to our base of members, partners and corporate users in the near future. 

We are looking for a seasoned Engineering Manager to join our Data Platform team to work closely with Analytics Cluster, Tech and Business teams.You will be responsible for helping us scale data products and responsible for managing Data, Backend and Machine Learning Engineers to deliver best in-class digital fitness products.

Your responsibilities 
  • Build, lead and serve a team of engineers at Urban Sports through hiring, coaching, mentoring, and hands-on career development.
  • Work alongside the product development leadership to foster a culture of continuous feedback, mutual accountability and clear ownership.
  • Work together with the Engineering team to ensure that we are following the industry’s best practices and high code quality standards.
  • Partner with the Director of Data and Product Managers to align and create short and long-term objectives based on team goals.
  • Lead by example: You are still hands-on and love writing code. We expect our engineering managers to spend 30% of their time doing hands-on technology work.
  • Work together with your team to assess objectives, making technical decisions (architecture, implementation, delivery) in a timely and confident manner.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines to ensure customer needs are identified and met.
  • Collaborate with and challenge your fellow developers to generate new ideas and innovative solutions that will best serve the Urban Sports ecosystem.
What you need to succeed 
  • You are an experienced software engineer who still contributes to the code, but also maintains an awareness of the bigger picture.
  • Strong engineering background in working with Python, Data Engineering, Machine Learning or AI topics. Check out our Techradar which includes technologies we apply for data.
  • Previous experience managing engineering teams successfully.
  • You are a humble leader, who is able to motivate a team and drive them to their full potential.
  • You are a self-organized individual, with focus and the ability to prioritize your workload using business data and metrics.
  • You thrive in a fast-paced release-focused environment with the focus on delivering quickly and efficiently, and then iterating continuously.
  • Your communication skills in English allow you to express technical concepts to stakeholders clearly and convincingly no matter their professional background
