ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY ENGINEER (RECOVERY)

This EHS Recovery Engineer role is to support Engineering, R&D, Production groups, dockside and offshore recovery missions and Land landings at all SpaceX’s locations. This position is critical as these groups rely on an EHS subject matter expert to mitigate occupational and compliance risk as they strive to meet aggressive targets and stretch the capabilities of existing processes to meet their goals. This Engineer’s primary tasks are to perform hazard assessments, incident investigations, work through employees’ safety concerns and issues, attend design reviews, as well as strategize to prevent/reduce injuries. In addition, this role is responsible for ensuring environmental compliance with all local, state, and federal regulatory requirements applicable to these departments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Safety

  • Develop, implement, and maintain site-specific safety policies and programs including the following tasks:
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, DOD, and federal safety regulations
  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety contingency plans (fires, spills, etc.)
  • Develop a proactive approach and plan to preventing and solving workplace safety issues
  • Perform work in an offshore/marine environment
  • Complete job hazard analysis and personal protective equipment (PPE) assessments
  • Provide regulatory guidance and safety support for site hazardous operations
  • Develop and implement field monitoring of employee exposures to workplace chemical hazards, and recommend process and product safety features that will reduce employees’ exposure to chemical and physical work hazards
  • Perform safety compliance and due diligence audits which will include facilities, machinery, and safety equipment
  • Develop and implement a corrective action system for deficiencies identified during due diligence audits
  • Complete and maintain all required safety logs and documentation, and submit reports of performance as requested
  • Investigate industrial accidents, injuries, or occupational diseases to determine root causes, corrective actions, and preventive measures
  • Manage our internal safety reporting system including reviewing inputs, conducting investigations, and tracking corrective actions, as appropriate

Environmental

  • Develop, implement, and maintain site-specific environmental policies and programs which includes the following compliance programs and/or tasks:
  • Hazardous and non-hazardous waste management, including waste characterization, profiling, documenting, reporting, and disposal coordination
  • Prepare a Spill Prevention Control Countermeasures (SPCC) plan as required
  • Investigate and report spills and releases
  • Develop and submit permits and perform inspections, monitoring, and reporting as required by local, state, and federal environmental regulations
  • Perform inspections, monitoring, and reporting as required by local/state and federal air quality regulations
  • Perform environmental compliance and due diligence audits periodically which will include our air, wastewater, stormwater, and hazardous waste/materials management programs
  • Perform any federal/state required environmental monitoring and reporting as required by environmental mitigation programs that have been agreed to by SpaceX
  • Review and interpret new and proposed environmental laws and regulations, and guide management regarding applicability and implementation

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3+ years of experience in the design, development, and general operational oversight of environmental, health and safety disciplines

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Ability to hold and maintain a registered paramedic certification, ALCS, and CPR
  • Experience in maritime operations
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in interpreting, applying, and documenting federal, state and local safety and environmental regulations
  • Experience in offshore EHS and paramedic environments
  • Experience with emergency response crews in incidents involving hazardous and non-hazardous material releases to air, soil, and water
  • Experience using Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)
  • Demonstrated strong propensity for hands-on work and attention to detail in either academic or career pursuits
  • Ability to multi-task, to manage shifting priorities, and to follow through on projects with minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate well with technicians, engineers, and management
  • Ability to work in a high-concentration, fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This is not a remote or hybrid position and will require relocation if not already local to the Hawthorne, CA area
  • Position occasionally requires the ability to work extended hours or weekends when needed
  • Ability to travel extensively to support recovery operations, which includes ocean-going activities
  • Ability lift at least 30 lbs

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:        Pay range:    Level I: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00/per year    Level II: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00/per year        Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
