At Modulr, our vision is a world where all businesses are powered by embedded payments. Modulr enables businesses, from SMEs to Enterprise, initially across the UK and Europe to efficiently pay-in, collect and disburse funds instantly via a range of payment schemes, accounts, and card products.  

We have created an industry-leading API platform with comprehensive online tools and access, to meet the demands of daily business payments. We have two routes to market. Our Core Business Payments product allows customers in any sector to connect to us and our expanding network of accounting and payroll platforms, including Sage, Xero, BrightPay and IRIS to automate payments. Our Vertical Solutions targets a growing range of industry verticals which directly connect their IT platforms to our APIs and webhooks. We solve complex payment problems for hundreds of clients in a range of industries, including Travel, Lending, Wage Advance, and Investment & Wealth.  

We are deeply integrated into the payment eco-system. In the UK, we are direct participants of Faster Payments and Bacs. Modulr hold settlement accounts at the Bank of England. Our payment network connectivity includes CHAPS, Open Banking, SEPA, SWIFT and account issuance in multiple currencies. We are principal issuing members of Visa and Mastercard schemes across UK and Europe.  

Our regulatory permissions and governance structure are the foundations of our business. We are regulated and supervised as an Authorised Electronic Money Institution (AEMI) in the UK by the Financial Conduct Authority and in the Netherlands by De Nederlandsche Bank.  

Our founding team has a wealth of experience in the payments industry and growing successful businesses. Modulr is backed by the venture arms of payments giants PayPal and FIS, as well as growth investors Blenheim Chalcot, General Atlantic, Frog Capital and Highland Europe.

The Role

The CDD Operations function is essential for identifying and mitigating risks to Modulr, including Money Laundering/Terrorist Financing, Fraud, Sanctions, and other Financial Crime risks.

The FinCrime Manager, Introduced Onboarding is a pivotal role responsible for leading and managing a team within our multi-site CDD Onboarding function, ensuring Modulr has a comprehensive and effective approach to Customer Due Diligence. This role includes overseeing onboarding processes to ensure they meet both regulatory requirements and the company’s risk appetite. Their primary focus will be to deliver a streamlined onboarding experience while maintaining robust controls that effectively mitigate financial crime risks.

The role holder will ensure onboarding processes, tools, and policies are not only consistent, effective and optimised but also evolve with industry changes, automation and Modulr’s growth. Additionally, the role will emphasize continuous improvement by leveraging insights and data to enhance outcomes and efficiency. They will work closely with 2LoD Compliance, Product, Technology, Sales, External clients, and other teams to ensure the seamless integration of processes and tools, all while maintaining a strong focus on delivering customer excellence at pace.

Specific Duties:

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance CDD onboarding processes, tools, and systems to support safe and rapid client onboarding aligned with Modulr’s risk appetite. We believe in automation but not at the risk of reducing our safeguards or affecting our risk appetite.
  • Ensure CDD onboarding processes are delivered consistently, efficiently and effectively, in compliance with regulatory requirements, internal policies and SLA’s.
  • Oversee and manage onboarding escalations and complex cases to ensure appropriate decisions are made while maintaining a high-quality client experience.
  • Lead the multi-site team responsible for CDD activity, including reviewing customer information, identifying risks, and determining appropriate actions to mitigate risks effectively.
  • Drive performance with renewed KPIs, providing training, implementing quality assurance frameworks, and ensuring continuous learning and improvement.
  • Implement and embed efficient automated onboarding workflows and systems that balance risk controls with exceptional customer experience and speed.
  • Ensure ongoing regulatory compliance by adapting to changes in regulations and supporting governance forums with relevant insights and reporting.
  • Collaborate with Product and Technology teams to identify opportunities for automation and process improvements, ensuring that onboarding processes remain scalable for future growth.
  • Utilize data and intelligence from CDD onboarding activities to identify emerging risks or trends and feed these into broader financial crime prevention strategies.
  • Provide advisory support to internal stakeholders, ensuring onboarding teams have the tools and knowledge needed to meet operational and compliance requirements.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement across the team and within the wider business.

About You:

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of delivering results in a fast-paced environment and be comfortable adapting to change. Strong stakeholder management is essential for success in this role, with preference given to candidates who have experience managing an offshore compliance team.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • You have extensive experience in a highly regulated environment with a focus on Financial Crime and AML, specifically within CDD onboarding or related areas.
  • You have wide knowledge and experience in UK and EU regulated environments, including Enhanced Due Diligence, PEPs, Sanctions, and Adverse Media.
  • You have a strong understanding of financial crime risks associated with client onboarding and are skilled at implementing and enhancing controls to mitigate these risks effectively.
  • You’re a proven leader with experience in managing teams, setting goals, and driving performance through training, quality assurance, and coaching.
  • You’re analytical and detail-oriented, with a strong ability to assess risks and define controls that align with business objectives whilst having a strong interest in technology and delivery.
  • You’re experienced in process improvement and have worked with Product and Technology teams to implement automation or enhancements.
  • You thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and are comfortable adapting to changing priorities or regulations.
  • You’re a confident communicator who can engage stakeholders, present findings, and influence decisions effectively.
  • You’re organized and proactive, capable of managing short-term tasks while contributing to longer-term projects.
  • You have a strong commitment to delivering exceptional customer experiences alongside robust risk management practices.

Skills and Experience We Are Interested In:

  • Significant experience in Financial Crime, specifically in CDD onboarding, with strong working knowledge of financial crime risks and controls.
  • Experience managing operational delivery teams, including resource planning, SLA management, and performance tracking.
  • Proven ability to improve processes and implement systems that balance efficiency, compliance, and customer satisfaction.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, including Product and Technology, to drive initiatives and enhancements.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and obligations in the financial services sector.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to use data to identify risks, improve controls, and optimize processes.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with experience reporting to senior stakeholders.
  • Relevant professional qualifications or certifications in Financial Crime, AML, or related fields.
