Lonely Planet, a leading global travel media company, is seeking a meticulous writer-editor to take on the multifaceted role of Freelance Lead Project Writer. With a deep passion for travel and a proven track record in writing and project management, you will contribute to and oversee the development of travel guidebooks and digital content, ensuring they uphold Lonely Planet's standards for depth, accuracy, and engaging storytelling.

Role Overview: As a Freelance Lead Project Writer, you will be tasked with writing sections of our upcoming guidebooks on Central America, as well as commissioning and coordinating additional content. This role blends hands-on writing with editorial management, making it ideal for candidates who excel in both creative and administrative capacities.

Responsibilities:

  • Write compelling and informative content for multiple sections across three Central America guidebooks.
  • Commission and manage content creation from other writers, ensuring consistency and quality across the publications.
  • Work closely with authors, contributors, and Lonely Planet’s editorial team to shape and refine content.
  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with key travel industry contacts and freelance contributors.
  • Manage project timelines and budgets, ensuring all content is delivered on schedule and meets Lonely Planet’s editorial standards.
  • Use analytics tools to assess content performance and make data-informed adjustments to content strategy.

Requirements:

  • Passion for travel and extensive knowledge of Central America is a must (experience with Costa Rica is preferred).
  • An extensive network of local contacts and experience with on-the-ground travel research.
  • 3-5 years of experience in print or digital media, with a significant portfolio in travel writing and editorial roles.
  • Strong project management skills, with experience in commissioning and editing travel content.
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex product and content requirements.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills, with a thorough understanding of AP, Chicago, and/or house style guides.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in spreadsheets and content management systems are advantageous.

Contract Details:

  • Six-month contract with a possibility of extension.
