Games Editor, Polygon

Full Time

Polygon is looking for a Games Editor to help shape and direct its coverage of video games. This role will manage editors and writers, edit and shape coverage, and also write occasionally as well.

WHO WE ARE

Polygon is a modern entertainment brand, covering the media that young people love. We connect our audience directly to the content they want to enjoy; to the culture and the inclusive community they want to be a part of; and to the stories and ideas they otherwise wouldn’t know existed.

Polygon is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what’s now, what’s next, and what’s possible.

As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As Games Editor, you’ll work with our Deputy Editor, Games to bring high quality video games coverage to Polygon that meets our readers’ interests. You’ll find stories, vet pitches, assign work to writers and other editors, and edit coverage, which includes news, analysis, reported stories, impressions, reviews, and continuing post-release coverage. You’ll lead brainstorms and plan around big tentpole events, and find stories to delight our readers between the big releases. You’ll use data to see what coverage resonates with Polygon’s audience. You’ll lead by example by writing as well.

The Games Editor also will be a linchpin in managing members of the games team, including both editors and writers. You’ll help them set and reach their own goals while also aligning with the overall demands of the Polygon’s games section. You’ll also collaborate with writers and editors across our guides, culture, entertainment, curation, commerce, and video teams.

WHO YOU ARE

Our ideal candidate is an empathetic people manager with experience leading teams. You’ll be experienced growing editors and writers, leading them to success through thoughtful feedback and mentorship.

You have a vision for the future of video games coverage, and want to match that vision to Polygon’s style, but also push us forward. You’re knowledgeable about the games space, but always curious about what’s new and different.

You’re a skilled editor who can help bring the best out of a writer’s pitch, shape a draft to be more compelling, or put the perfect headline on the finished product.

You’re comfortable with using modern newsroom strategies and tools to help stories find their audiences, like SEO, social and community platforms, and web analytics tools.

You’re organized and aren’t afraid of an editorial calendar. You like to spend time planning for long-term coverage while also adapting to changing trends as news happens.

You’re collaborative, and comfortable sharing your opinions and feedback respectfully yet directly. You can work not just with your own team, but with other teams and verticals.

If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We would love to have a chat and see if you could be a great addition to our team. We’ve hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.
