Head of Intellectual Property

Role Description  As the Head of Intellectual Property at Dropbox, you’ll be responsible for shaping and driving the company’s global IP strategy.  Entrepreneurial by nature, you’ll have company-wide impact, ensuring the protection of Dropbox’s intellectual property while supporting our culture of innovation through freedom of action initiatives. Responsibilities
  • Set and drive Dropbox’s intellectual property strategy in alignment with company goals and priorities
  • Lead a small team of high-performing IP professionals in identifying and protecting innovative solutions across the company
  • Drive freedom of action initiatives, including proactive industry engagement
  • Serve as an IP evangelist throughout the company, and educate employees on patent, open source, and trademark-related matters
  • Provide counsel and thought partnership on all IP matters, including those related to licensing, M&A, litigation, location strategy, tax, and commercial contracts
  • Manage budgets and spending
Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum of 12 years of global patent, trademark, and open source experience, including prior experience as in-house counsel, preferably in a technology or SaaS company
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and partner across all levels of the company, with exceptional communication skills
  • Excellent manager who empowers and grows team members
  • High integrity, strong ethics, and an unflappable demeanor
  • Demonstrated success in managing a high-performing IP team
  • Experience working in a technology or SaaS company
  • J.D. with strong academic credentials and demonstrated record of success as a lawyer
  • BS or graduate degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or related field
  • Member in good standing of bar and (if applicable) in-house counsel registration

Through our assessment process, we will identify your level that ties to compensation based on your experience and technical expertise along with the scope of the role. 

Dropbox takes a number of factors into account when determining individual starting pay, including job and level they are hired into, location/metropolitan area, skillset, and peer compensation.  We target most new hire offers between the minimum up to the middle of the range.

Salary/OTE is just one component of Dropbox’s total rewards package. All regular employees are also eligible for the corporate bonus program or a sales incentive (target included in OTE) as well as stock in the form of Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).

If you are assessed at the MGR6 level, below are the current Salary/OTE ranges (Subject to change):• US Zone 1: $284,800 - $335,000 - $385,300.• US Zone 2: $256,300 - $301,500 - $346,700.• US Zone 3: $227,800 - $268,000 - $308,200. If you are assessed at the MGR7 level, below are the current Salary/OTE ranges (Subject to change):• US Zone 1: $313,200 - $368,500 - $423,800.• US Zone 2: $281,900 - $331,700 - $381,500.• US Zone 3: $250,600 - $294,800 - $339,000. Dropbox uses the zip code of an employee’s remote work location to determine which metropolitan pay range we use. Current US Zone locations are as follows:• US Zone 1: San Francisco metro, New York City metro, or Seattle metro• US Zone 2: Austin (TX) metro, Chicago metro, California (outside SF metro), Colorado, Connecticut (outside NYC metro), Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York (outside NYC metro), Oregon, Pennsylvania (outside NYC or DC metro), Washington (outside Seattle metro) and Washington DC metro• US Zone 3: All other US locations
