šŸ“£ A bit about the role.

We’re looking for a Head of Strategy to join the team at Butternut for a 12 month maternity cover contract, reporting to the Chief Commercial Officer.

We're looking for a strategic leader and expert decision maker, to identify and execute on the most exciting opportunities to grow our total addressable market and make Butternut & Marro Europe’s leading dog and cat food brand. Strategy at Butternut is both about thinking and doing - you’ll need to thrive on a combination of theory and execution day to day.

As Head of Strategy you’ll oversee the development of our mid to long term strategy, playing a key role in bringing exciting ideas and ā€˜big bet’ opportunities to life. Over the next couple of years Butternut and Marro will be highly focussed on continuing our international expansion and ensuring we have a long term strategy which delivers another decade of world class performance. This will include launching into new international markets, retail channels, product categories and more.

🌱 In this role, you can expect to:

Long term strategic planning and execution:

  • Develop and execute on Butternut’s Long Range Plan on a 5-year time horizon, ensuring alignment across commercial, operational and foundational pillars of the business in all markets.
  • Oversee complex cross-functional global projects, from start to finish, ensuring efficient and effective execution against our Company Goals each quarter. For example, you’ll have ownership of launching Butternut into new markets planned for the year.
  • Lead a highly analytical and research focussed team, to deliver best in class insights on how to grow total addressable market and build market share (be that via organic launches or M&A)
  • Ensure decisions are made with clarity, at the right time, by the right people, to push Butternut forwards towards our North Star goal of feeding 1 million happy and healthy dogs.
  • Head up the go-to team in the business for competitor and market insights, to drive brand, marketing and digital product strategies forwards on a global scale.

Leadership, team and budget management:

  • Work very closely with Butternut’s co-founders and wider Leadership team day-to-day to bring our strategic mission to life throughout the business globally.
  • Manage, mentor and develop a high performing team of analysts, project managers and go-to-market specialists.
  • Set clear goals and expectations, providing regular feedback and support to teams.
  • Build and maintain a culture of exceptional performance, best-in-class strategic capabilities and a relentless focus on continuous improvement.

Complex problem solving and story telling:

  • Communicate the strategic vision for all of our brands (Butternut Box, PsiBufet and Marro) to internal and external stakeholders, including executive leadership and our board of investors.
  • Distill complex problems down into straightforward stories or solutions, bringing a diverse variety of team members along on the journey.

šŸ‘‹ A bit about you.

  • Expertise in developing and executing strategy at an executive level, with an in depth knowledge of strategy approaches or methodologies.
  • Experienced and assured in your abilities (must have 8+ years of experience in a strategic role, ideally within a DTC, e-commerce or tech-driven business).
  • Relevant experience managing multiple high visibility cross-functional projects (simultaneously) from start to finish - this could be internally or in a client facing role.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management, at all levels ranging from the most senior executives to entry level team members - demonstrated ability to work with a variety of teams with different ways of working 
  • An inclusive, empathetic leader with expertise in developing high performing teams and fostering the values of the organisation within them.
  • An expert understanding of commercial and financial KPIs, ideally in a DTC setting, and the impact actions may have on them.
  • Holds extremely high standards for operational excellence and makes things happen. An ideal candidate would have experience with new international market launches.
  • Share our belief that dogs and cats deserve better
  • Ideally, holding a Project Management qualification - Prince2, Agile PM, APMP, PMI or similar. However, for the right person Butternut would sponsor this.

We operate in synchronised hybrid , working 3 days per week from our White City office (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday) and 2 days from home.
