We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Indirect Tax Manager to lead and manage all aspects of indirect tax compliance, planning, and controversy in the U.S. This role requires a proactive and self-directed professional who will take full ownership of the U.S. indirect tax function with a strong analytical mind, excellent communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will be a subject matter expert in sales and use tax, property tax, gross receipts tax, and other applicable indirect taxes, ensuring accurate and timely filings while identifying opportunities for process improvements and tax savings. This position offers significant autonomy and ample opportunities for professional growth for a high-performing individual.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Compliance Management:
    • Oversee and manage the timely and accurate filing of all U.S. and Canadian indirect tax returns, including sales and use tax, property tax, and gross receipts taxes. This includes coordination with external service providers for outsourced tax functions.
    • Manage the sales tax exemption certificate process, ensuring proper documentation and compliance. 
    • Manage SOX controls and quarterly ASC 450 compliance for any US-based reserves. 
    • Ability to assist with VAT/GST compliance responsibilities globally.
  • Tax Planning & Strategy:
    • Identify and implement tax planning strategies to optimize indirect tax liabilities and minimize risk.
    • Analyze business transactions and new initiatives to determine indirect tax implications and provide proactive guidance to internal stakeholders.
    • Stay abreast of changes in indirect tax laws, regulations, and court decisions, assessing their impact on the company.
  • Audit Management & Controversy:
    • Manage and respond to indirect tax audits by state and local taxing authorities, including data gathering, analysis, and communication with auditors.
    • Prepare and defend audit positions, negotiating settlements when appropriate.
    • Research complex indirect tax issues and provide well-reasoned recommendations.
  • Process Improvement & Technology:
    • Drive continuous improvement in indirect tax processes, leveraging technology to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
    • Evaluate and recommend tax technology solutions (e.g., Vertex, Avalara) to streamline compliance and reporting.
    • Develop and implement internal controls related to indirect tax processes.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    • Collaborate effectively with various internal departments, including Accounting, Legal, Treasury, and Operations, to ensure proper indirect tax treatment of transactions, timely payment processing, and execution on system enhancements.
    • Provide training and guidance to internal teams on indirect tax matters.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA designation or Master's degree in Taxation preferred.
  • 3-5+ years of progressive experience in U.S. indirect tax, with demonstrated expertise in sales and use tax, property tax, and gross receipts tax, gained in a public accounting firm or large corporate tax department.
  • Deep and current understanding of U.S. state and local indirect tax laws and regulations.
  • Proven experience with independently managing indirect tax compliance cycles and audits.
  • Experience with international indirect tax (VAT/GST/DSTs) is preferred.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and research skills, with a strong ability to work through complex challenges autonomously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex tax concepts to non-tax professionals.
  • Proficiency in tax research tools (e.g., Bloomberg BNA, RIA Checkpoint, etc.).
  • Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Oracle, NetSuite) and tax automation software (e.g., Vertex, Avalara) is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, proactively manage multiple priorities, and consistently meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
The annual base salary range for this position for candidates located in the San Francisco Bay area is between: $158,000—$238,000 USD

Below is the annual base salary range for candidates located in California, Colorado, New York and Washington. Your actual base salary will depend on factors such as your skills, qualifications, experience, and work location. In addition, Okta offers equity (where applicable), bonus, and benefits, including health, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), flexible spending account, and paid leave (including PTO and parental leave) in accordance with our applicable plans and policies. The annual base salary range for this position for candidates located in California (excluding San Francisco Bay Area), Colorado, New York, and Washington is between:$142,000—$212,000 USD
