We are looking for a highly motivated Junior Backend Engineer to join our office in Berlin!

The primary mission of the Content Platform teams at Babbel is to develop tools and services that seamlessly deliver the core Learning Content to our users.

In your role as a Junior Backend Engineer, you will be able to work on a wide variety of topics including event-driven microservices architecture, content deployments, content data modeling, design and development of scalable APIs and services. Our tech stack is mainly on Ruby on Rails, Go, NodeJS, AWS and many more.

You will:

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with the other teams to design scalable APIs, make architectural decisions and evaluate technical debt within our systems
  • Write tests and do performance analysis on the systems we own
  • Troubleshoot and solve bugs and incidents
  • Analyze metrics, set alerts and monitoring to keep our systems healthy and performant
  • Document our systems, services and APIs in a systematic way
  • Bring your unique perspective and background to improve our way of working
  • Focus on continuous learning and influence the evolution of our engineering practices

You have:

  • Experience in building applications using Ruby/ GoLang or TypeScript
  • Knowledge about RESTful API design principles, HTTP and related concepts
  • Basic understanding of SQL, NoSQL databases (AWS DynamoDB)
  • Good understanding of fundamental computer science concepts such as data structures, algorithms
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and understanding of collaborative development workflows
  • Ability to write clear technical documentation for code and APIs
  • Fluency in written and spoken English

Nice to have:

  • Experience in building solutions using AWS services (e.g., Lambda, ECS, API Gateway, Kinesis, CloudWatch, S3)
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code, ideally with Terraform
  • Basic knowledge of frontend technologies (Web, Mobile)
  • Basic understanding of monitoring and observability, awareness of industry-standard monitoring solutions to check system health and performance (e.g. CloudWatch, PagerDuty, Rollbar)
  • Basic understanding of distributed systems and event-driven architectures
