The Google DeepMind Legal team provides proactive and strategic legal counselling to accelerate Google DeepMind’s 

In this role, you will partner closely with teams from across DeepMind, taking charge of the drafting, advising and negotiating on a wide range of agreements and providing holistic legal counsel to the teams you support.  

Key responsibilities:
  • Structure, draft and negotiate agreements associated with Google DeepMind’s research and operational activities. This includes inbound and outbound data licence agreements, inbound services agreements, software EULAs, collaboration agreements, and technology R&D agreements.
  • Support strategic research efforts by spotting and advising on legal issues and risks.
  • Provide impactful legal advice to Google DeepMind's teams for the smooth and efficient running of the business on a day to day basis, including in relation to copyright; open-sourcing; data collection; privacy; and licensing issues. 
  • Build positive relationships with cross-functional clients across our offices and advise them on legal issues and risks, streamline their contracting processes, and ensure a smooth interaction with Legal.
  • Advise senior stakeholders on legal issues and risks, including those associated with product launches and AI research.
  • Handle external counsel relationships both in the UK and globally as required, and seek and acquire the best specialist advice for projects on an ad hoc basis.
  • Share knowledge and best practices with other members of the Legal team.
About You

  • You have experience advising on a range of commercial matters with a good understanding of intellectual property and privacy issues.
  • You are organised, accustomed to working at a fast pace and juggling many different tasks. You are proactive, taking the initiative when needed.
  • You have excellent communication skills. 
  • You are adept at balancing legal, cultural and business demands and produce practical, solution-focused advice.
  • You enjoy variety and have a get-stuck-in mentality - no task is too big or too small.
  • You are resourceful and enjoy managing your own work and projects.
  • You are experienced partnering with senior stakeholders on sophisticated legal issues or matters of strategic significance, and instil trust with everyone you interact with.
  • You enjoy operating independently but love being part of a highly supportive and collaborative team. 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Proven experience in private practice and/or an in-house team.
  • Qualified solicitor in either England and Wales or a US attorney
  • Experience in negotiating, drafting and advising clients on technology-related commercial agreements.
Preferred qualifications
  • Prior in-house experience at a technology and/or research development organisation working side by side with the wider company to counsel on a variety of legal issues.
  • Interest or experience in science and innovative technology, including in the field of artificial intelligence research or deployment of machine learning systems.
