The Business Applications team builds custom Appian applications for our enterprise. The team collaborates extensively with stakeholders across the business and is responsible for delivering applications that simplify operations. From data analysis, to stakeholder management, to creative problem solving, our application developers combine their skills and leverage Appian’s technology to tackle challenging business problems across the enterprise.

We are looking for a Manager of Business Applications with demonstrated leadership skills, knowledge of the Appian platform and related technologies, strong analytical skills, superb customer management skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across departments. As the Manager of Business Applications, your primary responsibility will be to lead and manage Appian projects and programs that span multiple development teams. You will partner with our product management functions to ensure your development teams prioritize the highest value work first. You will manage resource allocation to ensure our customers achieve value through successful project delivery. You will help identify and implement process improvements and will develop and scale a team that delivers world-class Appian applications. 

Responsibilities:

People

  • Foster a positive team environment focused on advanced technical knowledge, effective collaboration, and positive customer outcomes.

  • Manage, develop and mentor application developers and coach them on best practices for agile Appian delivery.

  • Provide ongoing professional development and career counseling to team members.  Ensure that team members receive timely performance feedback. Create learning plans for team members based on department needs and their unique professional development interests.

  • Ensure team members are recognized for their contributions to customer and team success.

  • Advocate for your team’s needs with senior department leadership. 

  • Collaborate with adjacent teams on improving processes and prioritizing incidents your developers should focus on.

  • Manage communications on escalated incidents related to your applications with stakeholders.

  • Assist with adding top talent to our team by participating in recruiting events and conducting candidate interviews.

  • Ensure knowledge is distributed adequately on your team to reduce the risk of bottlenecks or employee departures.

  • Perform HR management tasks for team members including talent snapshots, promotion nominations, expense and time-off approvals, etc.

Process & Technology

  • Establish technical guidance and delivery practices and measure your team's adherence to them.

  • Deliver value to our customers through project success.

  • Work with Appian stakeholders and our product management function to define business processes. Participate in visioning sessions with stakeholders and developers to translate business requirements into product features. Present technical and business aspects of proposed solutions to VP and C-level audiences. Assist product managers in identifying other business process opportunities that could be targeted with Appian's software.

  • Manage risk and schedule during the project lifecycle, including escalating all critical issues and blockers.

  • Partner with our product management functions to establish a roadmap and to set general direction (e.g. project and major features) for your development teams.

  • Monitor teams' delivery progress and create visibility towards deliverables.

  • Identify macro trends in customer issues and internal application supportability/documentation/training deficiencies. Communicate these, with proposals for improvement, to Business Technology leadership and key stakeholders on a quarterly basis.

  • Research, develop, and implement (through your team) new tools to speed up and simplify application development.

  • Ensure all documentation, training, and tooling your team develops and maintains is up to date, easily accessible and globally reusable.

Requirements:

  • B.S./B.A. in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics or related field/degree

  • 5+ years of experience in an agile delivery environment with at least 3 years of experience leading an Appian delivery team

  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise with the Appian platform and related technologies (e.g. Appian Lead Developer certification)

  • Proven ability to coach and mentor technical staff

  • Excellent problem solving skills and talent for identifying creative solutions

  • Exceptional communication and customer management skills (verbal/written)

Preferred:

  • Certifications: Certified ScrumMaster, PMP
