MANAGER, ROPES ACCESS (STARSHIP)

The Ropes Access Manager plays a pivotal role in supporting SpaceX’s Starship operations team by leading the development and execution of safe, innovative ropes access solutions for complex, high-stakes environments. This role ensures the seamless setup and management of access systems critical to Starship assembly, maintenance, and testing, enabling the team to achieve mission-critical objectives with precision and safety. By overseeing skilled technicians, collaborating with engineering teams, developing internal training for qualification program, and upholding rigorous safety standards, the Ropes Access Manager drives operational excellence, contributing directly to the success of Starship’s ambitious goal of advancing human space exploration.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Strategic Planning & Safety:
    • Oversee the development and implementation of safe, efficient ropes access solutions across diverse and dynamic environments.
    • Establish and enforce comprehensive safety protocols, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Operational Leadership:
    • Manage ropes access operations, including resource allocation, equipment integrity, and adherence to process guidelines.
    • Supervise and coordinate teams performing ropes access, rigging, and related tasks, ensuring seamless execution of projects.
    • Direct the setup and operation of ropes access systems, rigging for large assemblies, and personnel platforms (boom lifts, scissor lifts, etc.).
  • Team Management & Training:
    • Lead recruitment, training, and development of ropes access teams, fostering a culture of safety and excellence.
    • Develop internal training and qualification program for non-ropes access technicians.
    • Qualify non-ropes access technicians in proper ropes access techniques, equipment use, and compliance with safety standards.
    • Conduct performance evaluations and implement professional development plans for team members.
  • Collaboration & Project Management:
  • Partner with production and engineering teams to design innovative work access solutions tailored to project needs.
  • Interpret and apply engineering drawings, work instructions, and specifications to ensure operational accuracy.
  • Ensure all operations are completed on time to the highest safety and quality standards.
  • Implement systems to monitor and improve safety, equipment reliability, and team performance.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma OR equivalency certificate.
  • 5+ years of experience in ropes access environments (e.g., aerospace, oil & gas, or construction).
  • 2+ years of leadership experience in a technical or operational setting.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • IRATA or SPRAT Ropes Access Level 3 Certification.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, occupational safety, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Extensive experience in the aerospace, aviation, military, oil & gas, or other high-reliability industries.
  • Proficiency in mechanical, welding, or electrical systems, with the ability to oversee multidisciplinary tasks.
  • Advanced knowledge of pressure, temperature, and flow measurement devices, as well as precision measuring instruments.
  • Strong project management skills, including experience with budgeting, scheduling, and resource planning.
  • Expertise in operating and maintaining machinery, hand tools, and power tools requiring manual dexterity.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities in a high-paced environment.
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office and project management software; familiarity with CAD or engineering design tools is a plus.
  • Proven ability to foster collaboration and lead diverse teams in a high-stakes environment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift at least 25 lbs unassisted and perform physical tasks as needed for oversight and training.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% for project oversight or team coordination.
  • Comfortable working at heights, climbing ladders, and operating in confined spaces.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including overtime and weekends, to meet project deadlines.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate personnel platforms or other equipment as needed.
